A new Netflix drama is bringing Jhumpa Lahiri’s celebrated stories to the screen with an eight-episode series. The official trailer for Unaccustomed Earth arrived on November 5, 2026, showing Freida Pinto as a woman whose life is upended by a health crisis and a long-buried romance. All episodes will arrive on Netflix on December 17, 2026.

What the Trailer Shows

The two-minute-and-42-second trailer introduces Parul Chaudhury (Freida Pinto), a wife and mother who has spent five years in Mumbai. She returns to Cambridge, Massachusetts, a place she once called home, after receiving a life-changing cancer diagnosis. Her homecoming puts her face to face with Amit Mukherjee (Siddharth), the man she loved in college but left behind to honor her father’s wishes.

Old feelings come back quickly. The trailer shows Parul trying to make sense of her marriage, her role as a mother, and the life she gave up years ago. Her choices begin to affect the people around her, including her husband Jai (Indraneil Sengupta) and her teenage son Kaushik (Adi Roy).

The series is set inside a close-knit Indian American Bengali community in Cambridge and Boston, where friendships go back decades and private decisions rarely stay private for long. Netflix shared the trailer with a simple message: “Beneath every family tree, secrets take root”.

A Book That Topped the Best Seller List

Unaccustomed Earth was first published in 2008. The short story collection explores the lives, relationships, and identities of second- and third-generation Indian Americans. It became Jhumpa Lahiri’s first book to reach the top of The New York Times Best Seller list.

The Netflix adaptation takes characters and stories that existed in separate narratives in the book and connects them into one ongoing family drama. The show is not a one-to-one retelling of any single short story. Instead, it brings the emotional world of Lahiri’s writing into a continuous story about love, loyalty, and belonging.

Who Is Behind the Series

Madhuri Shekar serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Shekar’s previous credits include 3 Body Problem and The Nevers. Ritesh Batra, known for directing The Lunchbox, Photograph, and Our Souls at Night, directed the first two episodes and also serves as an executive producer.

Jhumpa Lahiri is an executive producer on the series alongside John Wells, Nisha Ganatra, Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow, and Celia Costas. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television.

Lahiri shared her thoughts on the adaptation in a statement to Netflix’s Tudum:

“Charting its own course through my stories, this series deftly layers themes of loyalty and betrayal, truth-telling, and lies. Exceptional acting and a compelling plot will speak to anyone who has ever had to navigate questions of belonging and loss.”

The Cast Around Freida Pinto

Freida Pinto leads the series as Parul Chaudhury. Pinto described the character as someone who does not fit into easy moral boxes.

“I think she’s a very complicated character,” Pinto said. “It is not just about what society would want her to do. It’s about what she deeply knows her heart needs, what her body and her soul needs.”

Siddharth plays Amit Mukherjee, Parul’s former love. Sarayu Blue plays Ruma, Amit’s sister and Parul’s close friend. Indraneil Sengupta plays Parul’s husband Jai, and Adi Roy plays their son Kaushik. Justin Bartha appears as Adam, Ruma’s husband, and Iyla Sundarsingh McKaig plays their daughter Hema. Parveen Kaur plays Nina, Amit’s girlfriend. Jayant Kripalani plays family patriarch Pranab, and Palomi Ghosh and Swayam Bhatia play Anjali and Sudha Menon.

Pinto also spoke about the larger world of the series, beyond her own character:

“It’s not just Parul, it’s the world. It’s the kind of South Asian American community that we have never seen on television before.”

All eight episodes of Unaccustomed Earth will premiere on Netflix on December 17, 2026. The series will be available to stream worldwide on the same date, including in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and India.
