The six-episode limited series is produced by the team behind hits like Lupin and Barbarians and features a standout cast from Germany’s film and television industry. After beginning production in late 2024, the show is finally ready for its worldwide premiere.

Unfamiliar will be released globally on Netflix on Thursday, February 5, 2026. All six episodes of the limited series will be available at once for streaming.
The series was initially expected to arrive in 2025 but was later scheduled for this early 2026 release. This places it among Netflix’s key international offerings for the year.
Story and Plot: A Safe House in Berlin
The story of Unfamiliar centers on former spies Simon and Meret Schäfer, who operate a secret safe house called ‘The Nest’ in the heart of Berlin. Their business is providing refuge for people who must not be found. However, their quiet life shatters when a threat from their past resurfaces.
The official synopsis states they find themselves “hiding from assassins, Russian agents, the BND, ex-lovers and a whole bunch of people they have wronged – all while trying to keep their marriage together”.
The danger escalates severely when their cover is blown, putting not only their own lives but also the life of their young daughter at extreme risk. The series explores the collision of personal relationships and professional peril.
Main Cast and Characters
Netflix has assembled a strong ensemble cast led by two renowned German actors.
- Susanne Wolff plays Meret Schäfer, the ex-spy and wife managing the safe house. Wolff is known for her role in Sisi & I.
- Felix Kramer plays Simon Schäfer, Meret’s husband and partner in both marriage and espionage. Kramer starred in Dogs of Berlin and appeared in Dark.
They are joined by a notable supporting cast:
- Andreas Pietschmann (Dark, 1899) as Jonas Auken.
- Samuel Finzi as Josef Koleev.
