Sony and developer Firesprite have officially set a release date for the highly awaited horror sequel. Until Dawn 2 will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on January 28, 2027. The announcement came during the September 2026 State of Play showcase, where a new trailer gave players a closer look at the terrifying journey ahead.

Pre-orders for the game will begin on September 10, 2026. Two editions will be available: the Standard Edition and a Digital Deluxe Edition that includes bonus costumes and extra content.

The sequel moves away from the snowy mountains of the original game and takes players to a tropical island setting. This time, the story follows a group of fake ghost hunters who run a popular paranormal YouTube channel called Dead True. The twist? They have never actually encountered anything supernatural. Their scares have always been staged for views.

That changes when the crew signs a deal with a major TV network and gets sent to an abandoned island in the South Pacific to film their first properly funded episode. What starts as a trip filled with sun and sand quickly turns into a fight for survival as they uncover centuries-old secrets hungry for revenge.

A New Kind of Horror on Akishima Island

The game takes place on Akishima Island, a remote location abandoned after a luxury resort mysteriously shut down in the 1970s. The island holds dark secrets that have been waiting for vengeance for hundreds of years.

The Dead True crew first appears at Blackwood Sanitorium, investigating events that took place there 12 years earlier. Fans of the original game will recognize this location from the first Until Dawn. The group later attends HorrorCon in Sydney, where they meet Yoona (played by Gia Kim), a survivor of a supernatural attack. She shows them a dark, necrotic scar and warns them about what awaits on the island.

The trailer shows Owen (Dacre Montgomery) facing a difficult choice: follow a signal to find his missing friend Nate (Spence Moore II) or cross a rickety bridge to investigate a strange bar. Meanwhile, Mina (Camila Senna) is ordered by the network to perform a ritual sacrifice on camera. Players will decide whether to sacrifice the crew’s pet chicken or use Mina’s own blood instead.

Star-Studded Cast Brings the Horror to Life

The game features a talented cast of actors bringing the Dead True crew to life. The main cast includes:

  • Dacre Montgomery (known for Stranger Things and Power Rangers) as Owen
  • Neil Newbon (voice of Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3)
  • Peter Stormare returning as the mysterious Dr. Hill
  • Andie Ju
  • Tanner Buchanan
  • Spence Moore II as Nate
  • Camila Senna as Mina
  • Sarah Catherine Hook as Izzy, the team’s new intern

Peter Stormare’s return as Dr. Hill creates a direct link to the original game. His character was closely tied to the events of the first Until Dawn, and fans are eager to see how he fits into this new story.

Choice and Consequence Return

Developer Firesprite has taken over the series from original creator Supermassive Games. The studio previously worked on Horizon: Call of the Mountain and The Persistence.

The game stays true to the series’ signature Butterfly Effect system, where every decision changes the story. Choices big and small determine who survives and who dies. Managing relationships between crew members matters more than ever, with some story branches depending on how characters feel about each other.

Firesprite has partnered with AdHoc Studio, the creators of Dispatch, to craft the story. The team promises a layered narrative with rich characters, sharp dialogue, complicated relationships, tough decisions, and plenty of gruesome deaths.

Connections to the Original Game

While Until Dawn 2 is a standalone experience with new characters and a new setting, it does connect to the first game in meaningful ways.

The most obvious connection is the return of Blackwood Sanitorium, a major location from the original Until Dawn. The Dead True crew visits this abandoned facility to shoot an episode about the tragic events that happened there 12 years ago. The trailer also shows the wendigo, the iconic monster from the first game, attacking the Dead True team.

Dr. Hill’s return as a character played by Peter Stormare is another direct link to the original. How he fits into this new story remains to be seen, but his presence suggests the sequel is more connected to the original than many fans expected.
