At first, Wes enjoys hearing Jill’s unfiltered thoughts. His friends Andy (Harry Shum Jr.) and Breeda (Leah McKendrick) advise him to tell Jill the truth. But Wes discovers that Jill is grieving and decides to keep listening. He becomes drawn to her personality through her messages.
Wes eventually seeks Jill out in person. The two meet and start spending time together. But the secret about the phone number creates problems. Jill discovers the truth, and this causes conflict between them.

The True Story Behind the Film
Writer-director Leah McKendrick got the idea for Voicemails for Isabelle from a surprising place. She was at a comedy club watching a stand-up showcase. One comedian talked about her father leaving her long voicemails. The next comedian joked that her father never called because he had died.
This moment made McKendrick think about her own sister. She imagined what it would be like if her sister died. McKendrick realized she would keep calling her sister’s phone.
McKendrick calls the film a “love letter” to her sister. She believes that knowing true love through family helps people find it in romantic relationships.
“I think if you’ve experienced true love through family, you don’t settle when you’re searching for it in romantic love because you know what it feels like,” McKendrick told PEOPLE.
