The ABC crime drama Will Trent just changed forever. The April 14 episode, titled “The Blank Expanse of Nothing,” killed off a main character in a way that nobody saw coming. Sonja Sohn, who played GBI Deputy Director Amanda Wagner since the show started, is leaving the series. Her character died on the street after Adelaide Trevens set a deadly trap for Will Trent. The showrunners confirmed this is not a fake death. Amanda is really gone, and the team at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will never be the same.

The episode aired on ABC on April 14, 2026, and is now streaming on Hulu. Viewers in the USA can watch on ABC and Hulu. UK viewers can stream on Disney+. Canada airs the show on CTV and streams on Disney+. Australia streams on Disney+ as well. India viewers can watch on Disney+ Hotstar.

Amanda Wagner’s Secret Investigation Turns Deadly

Amanda spent most of this episode working behind the scenes with the FBI. She was tracking a mysterious figure called the Commander, who connects to Adelaide and the cult group that worships serial killer James Ulster. The FBI agents told Amanda they did not trust Will to share information if they asked him directly. So Amanda agreed to work on her own.

She found a young man connected to the Commander and started following him on foot. But someone was waiting for her. An unseen attacker stabbed her multiple times in the chest. Will found her body after Adelaide called him to say she left a “present” around the corner.

The showrunners told Variety that Amanda’s death was planned early in the season. Karine Rosenthal said, “Amanda has been the character who has protected Will for as long as she has known him. So this gives us the opportunity for a completely new dynamic in the GBI, because her replacement will not have that same relationship with Will.”

Will Tries to Trap Adelaide But Loses Everything

While Amanda worked her lead, Will Trent (played by Ramón Rodríguez) called in sick to work. He planned to meet Adelaide at a restaurant to get information about his kidnapped uncle, Antonio. Will made a matchbox with a hidden tracker to put on Adelaide. He wanted to follow her and rescue his family member.

But Adelaide saw through the plan. She used restaurant workers to create a distraction and escaped. Then she called Will to deliver the terrible news.

“What a shame, Will. While we made these dinner plans, I really was going to give you everything you wanted: your uncle, your life, me, all of it, but you had to go ruin it by having your boss go looking for me. It’s over, Will. You’re never going to see Antonio again. And I left you a little present.”

Will found Amanda bleeding on the ground. She died before help could arrive. The show’s producers confirmed this was not a fake-out death. Daniel T. Thomsen told Variety that Sonja Sohn handled the news with “an impressive amount of grace.” He added, “Nobody gets to always exit their shows — even on the writing side — on their own terms all the time. It’s hard to do that with grace. So it was just very impressive. She is a total pro.”

Faith Faces a Dark Case While Questioning Her Future

The episode also followed Faith Mitchell (played by Iantha Richardson) and Michael Ormewood (played by Jake McLaughlin) on a different case. A teenager named Grace locked herself in a car and told Faith that aliens took her. Faith helped the girl stay calm while Ormewood investigated.

The team visited a place called Shelly’s Alien Emporium, which led them to a cheap motel. There, they found out that “alien” was code for a human trafficking ring. Angie Polaski (played by Erika Christensen) helped Faith understand that some girls survive these crimes. Angie shared her own painful past with Faith, creating a stronger bond between the two women.

Faith fought off one of the attackers and helped send Grace back home safely to her parents. But she felt defeated because the team arrested only two people. The rest of the trafficking ring is still out there. This case made Faith think again about leaving the GBI. She had spent part of the episode wondering if she wanted the dangerous life that Will and Amanda live. By the end, she realized the GBI needs her to keep helping victims.

Fans React to the Shocking Death on Social Media

Social media exploded after the episode ended. Fans on Twitter and Reddit shared their shock and sadness over losing Amanda Wagner. Many viewers said they did not expect the show to kill off such an important character. Some fans wrote that Will will never forgive himself for involving his boss in the Adelaide situation.

One fan posted, “I can’t believe they actually killed Amanda. She was Will’s only real family. This changes everything.” Another viewer wrote, “Adelaide just made the biggest mistake of her life. Will is going to burn everything down to find her now.”

The showrunners told Variety that Amanda’s death “sets off a chain of events that is going to take us to the end of the season.” They also said the door is open for Sonja Sohn to return in flashbacks or as a voice in Will’s head, similar to how the show used James Ulster after his death.

What Happened to Will’s Uncle Antonio

The episode did not show what happened to Will’s uncle Antonio (played by John Ortiz). Adelaide told Will that he will never see Antonio again. But the show has not confirmed if Antonio is dead or still alive somewhere. This open question will likely drive Will’s actions in the remaining episodes of Season 4.

The next episode, titled “Our Last Dance,” picks up right after Amanda’s death. The official description says, “Reeling yet relentless, the team hunts Adelaide and searches for Antonio. As Adelaide systematically eliminates her own acolytes, Will teeters on the edge, haunted by a grief so strong it could unravel the team.”

Ramón Rodríguez told Us Weekly that the upcoming episodes will take the audience on an emotional ride. He said, “It is going to be a real emotional roller-coaster. It really is.”

The show has already been renewed for Season 5. Amanda’s death will change the GBI’s leadership and how Will works with his new boss. The showrunners said her replacement will not have the same protective relationship with Will. This creates new challenges for the character going forward.

Will Trent airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on ABC. New episodes stream the next day on Hulu in the US, Disney+ internationally, and Disney+ Hotstar in India.
