Willem Dafoe has seen the final cut of Werwulf, and he is not holding back. The four-time Oscar nominee says the new Robert Eggers horror film is dark, unnerving, and nothing like the werewolf movies audiences are used to. Dafoe also broke his own rule about judging his own work just to tell people the film is worth their time.

Dafoe’s Simple Warning About the Title

Speaking exclusively to JustWatch in an interview published on October 24, 2026, Dafoe described what audiences should expect from Werwulf. His message was clear: the title is not a promise of the usual werewolf story.

“It’s dark. It’s unnerving. It’s not a traditional horror. It’s a continuation of his work. He gets better and better, I think. I don’t want to get into spoiler territory… but it’s impressive. It’s beautiful.” — Willem Dafoe to JustWatch

Dafoe added a second point that speaks directly to how the film might change the genre for viewers.

“Werwulf is really interesting. It doesn’t lean into the normal tropes and none of the traditional werewolf stories, so don’t let the title throw you.” — Willem Dafoe

The actor said he had seen the finished film and liked it a great deal. He admitted he was breaking his personal rule against judging his own performances because he wanted to get people excited for what Eggers had made.

What Werwulf Is Actually About

Werwulf is a gothic horror film set in 14th-century England, around the year 1300. The story follows a small village terrorized by a mysterious creature. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays a cursed farmer trying to find salvation through love, and Lily-Rose Depp plays his wife.

Dafoe plays a hunter and knight tasked with ridding the countryside of wolves. His character is the only figure in the film based on a real historical person. Eggers confirmed the role directly: “It’ll be clear from the trailer that Willem is a hunter”.

The cast also includes Ralph Ineson, Jack Morris, Ned Dennehy, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach.

Why the Werewolf Rules Do Not Apply Here

Eggers has explained in multiple interviews why Werwulf does not follow the werewolf playbook. The director told Esquire that the film builds its own mythology from medieval sources rather than relying on cinema traditions.

“All the clichés of being bitten by a werewolf and silver bullets and a lot of the stuff that has become almost campy doesn’t exist in the mythology of this movie.” — Robert Eggers to Esquire

Eggers also told Empire that going back to old folklore gave him a way to avoid the traps that make werewolf movies feel tired. He said the creature in Werwulf is treated as a mystery rather than a full reveal, a choice that keeps the horror grounded.

The medieval setting gave Eggers freedom because werewolf lore from 1300s England is thin. The director explained that the wool trade led to a major effort to remove wolves from England, which meant werewolf stories in England faded as the animals disappeared. That historical detail shaped the film’s timeline and its themes.

The Real History Behind Dafoe’s Hunter

Dafoe gave The Playlist a detailed explanation of his character’s real-world roots in an interview published on October 15, 2026. The hunter was selected by the king to eliminate wolves from England because the country was poor and wool was its main source of wealth.

“He’s a man on a mission. So that can make some people crazy. But one interesting thing is he’s the only character in the movie that’s based on a real-life person.” — Willem Dafoe to The Playlist

That historical anchor gives Dafoe’s role a different weight from the cursed farmer at the center of the story. The film places a real wolf hunter against a supernatural threat, and the clash between the two is part of what Dafoe describes as an unusual and powerful experience.

Release Dates for the United States, United Kingdom, and Global Audiences

Werwulf arrives in United States theaters on Friday, December 25, 2026, through Focus Features. The United Kingdom and Ireland release follows on Friday, January 1, 2027, through Universal Pictures.

Australia also gets the film on January 1, 2027. Argentina is listed for January 21, 2027. Release dates for India and other global markets are set by local distributors and have not been confirmed as a single worldwide date. The film is a theatrical exclusive, and no streaming date has been announced.

The Motion Picture Association has not yet given Werwulf an official rating at the time of writing.

A Fourth Team-Up for Dafoe and Eggers

Werwulf marks the fourth collaboration between Dafoe and Eggers. The pair previously worked together on The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu. Dafoe told JustWatch that his admiration for Eggers goes back to the director’s first feature, The Witch.

“When I saw The Witch — I’ve said this before, but it really remains with me — I entered that world so easily. It was my world. It was so complete. Nothing was there for show. Everything functioned. Everything had a place. He’s very good at making a world that you can enter.” — Willem Dafoe

That history explains why Dafoe’s comments carry weight. He is not a casual observer of Eggers’ work. He has been inside four of the director’s films, and his reaction to Werwulf is that the finished film does something different with a monster audiences think they already know.
