The Russo family faced their biggest challenge yet as Wizards Beyond Waverly Place wrapped up its run with a four-episode Season 3 that aired on August 4, 2026 on Disney Channel. The finale event, titled “One Last Spell,” brought the story of the wizard family to a close while delivering surprises that left fans talking.
The season picked up right where Season 2 left off, with Alex Russo (Selena Gomez) trapped in an alternate dimension after jumping through a portal. Her daughter Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) took center stage in the quest to bring her mother back home.
Billie’s Journey to Rescue Her Mother
The final season followed Billie as she dealt with the fallout of Alex’s disappearance. Still hurting from losing her mother at the end of Season 2, Billie discovered that the only way to rescue Alex was to reunite with her long-lost father, Damien Penwulf (Brandon Micheal Hall).

In this dream world, Harper tried to keep Alex in the apartment, claiming a maintenance man was coming over. But the visitor turned out to be Mason Greyback (Gregg Sulkin), Alex’s ex-boyfriend from the original series. Harper thought Mason was going to propose to Alex.

Mason helped Alex understand that she had a whole other life waiting for her. “You have a whole other life, Alex. You got married. You have a beautiful daughter. And she needs you. That’s the life that you’re meant to live. You have to go back,” Mason told her. Before saying goodbye, he left her with these words: “I’ll always love you, Alex Russo. And I’ll always be watching over you”.
Actor Gregg Sulkin fully supported the decision about his character’s fate.
The Final Battle Against Lord Morsus
After Alex escaped the dream world and returned to her family, the Russos faced their greatest threat. Lord Morsus created a rift and attacked the Russo home.
Using Justin’s voice, Morsus called Billie, Alex, and Damien back to the house. Billie immediately sensed something was wrong. The three came face to face with the villain, who blamed Alex for turning Damien against him. Damien defended Alex, saying she showed him who he truly was instead of stealing him away.
Just when Morsus was about to strike, Theresa Russo (Maria Canals-Barrera), Alex’s mother, hit him with a lamp, breaking his control and bringing the family back to their senses. The family united to fight back.
But Billie chose a different path. She showed kindness to Morsus, saying she would not give up on him. She talked to him and made him understand that he did not have to continue down his destructive path.
The Russo family ultimately defeated Lord Morsus and found their happy ending. Alex reunited with her husband Damien and daughter Billie, and the family came together.

Selena Gomez returned to the franchise not just as Alex Russo but also as a director. She made her directorial debut with the Season 3 premiere episode. Gomez appeared in more than one episode of the final season, giving longtime fans a major reason to watch.

Mason’s Death Left Unexplained
Fans were upset that Mason’s death was never explained. Viewers took to social media to voice their frustration.
“I’m truly upset that nothing got explained it just jumped from scene to scene and had no true depths of fear. The acting was great, but the plot?? They did better in the season 2 finale,” a Reddit user said.
“Extremely disappointed. It was horrible writing. No explanations about Mason’s death, like he’s just dead; don’t know how he died, but he is,” another commented.
Max and Jerry Russo Absent
