The Marvel Cinematic Universe is bringing a classic Avenger to life in a brand-new way with Wonder Man, a series set to premiere this week. The show stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, an actor trying to land his big break in Hollywood who happens to have incredible powers. Unlike many MCU heroes, Simon has always had his abilities, a detail that has fans asking a major question as the release approaches: is Wonder Man secretly one of the MCU’s new mutants? The show’s creators have addressed the theory, and the answer is not as simple as you might think.
The series arrives on January 27, 2026, with all eight episodes available to stream on Disney+.
The Wonder Man Release Details: A New Kind of Marvel Show
Wonder Man is not a typical superhero origin story. From its concept, the show was designed to be different. The series comes from creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, who were given significant freedom to develop their version of the character.
They focused on Simon’s life in Hollywood and his personal relationship with his powers, rather than telling a standard hero’s journey. The story follows Simon Williams, a struggling actor who gets cast as the lead in a fictional reboot of a “Wonder Man” movie. The catch? He must hide his very real superpowers because Hollywood has rules against superpowered actors.
“When it came to Simon Williams, they gave me kind of free rein,” showrunner Andrew Guest said. “There wasn’t necessarily a run of Wonder Man that they wanted to look at. They wanted to make a show about the entertainment industry”.
The entire season will be available for streaming on Tuesday, January 27. This is a full-season binge release, allowing viewers to watch the complete story at their own pace.
The Core Mystery: How Did Simon Williams Get His Powers?
In the original Marvel Comics, Simon Williams gains his abilities through a deliberate experiment. He is the son of an industrialist whose company fails, leading him to commit embezzlement. To avoid prison, he accepts an offer from the villain Baron Zemo. Zemo subjects Simon to an “ionic ray” treatment, transforming him into a being of ionic energy with super strength, durability, and other powers.
The MCU version changes this story completely. In the new series, Simon Williams has possessed his powers since he was a child. There is no accident, no experiment, and no Baron Zemo involved in his origin. The show does not provide a clear explanation for how or why he got them. This major shift from the comics is what sparks the mutant theory.
Because his powers are innate and part of him from a young age, they fit a pattern seen with other characters recently introduced as mutants in the MCU, such as Ms. Marvel and Namor. The series even introduces another character, Doorman (played by Byron Bowers), who is explicitly identified as a mutant, adding more mutant-related elements to the story.

What the Creators Say About the Mutant Question
So, is he a mutant? When directly asked if Simon Williams is one of the MCU’s mutants, the show’s creators were purposefully vague.
“I don’t know,” both Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest said in unison when asked. Guest added with a smile, “It’s a good question, though…”.
This non-answer is a strategic choice. It keeps the character’s future in the MCU flexible and allows for different storytelling possibilities down the line. By not confirming or denying his mutant status, Marvel leaves the door open for Simon to be connected to the growing mutant narrative or to remain a unique, unexplained powerful being.
The series is more focused on Simon’s current life and struggles than on explaining his past. It explores his attempt to navigate fame and secrecy while being hunted by the Department of Damage Control (DODC), which considers him a dangerous threat.
“Truthfully, if you are going in to watch this show expecting a superhero show that is typically like something you’ve seen before, I think you will not like the show,” Cretton said. He explained the series is about how Simon’s powers “manifest in a way that helps you understand the pain that’s inside there”.
The Impact of His Powers on the Plot
Simon’s secret powers are the central conflict of the show. A new Hollywood rule called the “Doorman Clause” prohibits anyone with superpowers from auditioning for roles. This forces Simon to hide his true nature to pursue his acting dreams.
Meanwhile, the DODC is actively hunting him. Agent Cleary of the DODC describes Simon as “superpowered” and “incredibly dangerous”. This pursuit leads the agency to recruit a familiar face: Trevor Slattery, played by Ben Kingsley. Slattery, the actor who once impersonated the Mandarin, is tasked by the DODC to get close to Simon, monitor him, and eventually betray him.
The show presents a character who is not trying to save the world, but simply trying to live his life and achieve his personal goals while dealing with the burden of his abilities.
