Marvel Studios has found its Angel. Asa Germann, the actor behind Sam Riordan in the superhero series Gen V, will play the winged mutant Warren Worthington III in the upcoming X-Men reboot. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028.

The casting news broke on September 10, 2026, with The Hollywood Reporter first reporting that Germann was in final talks for the role. Variety later confirmed the addition, making Germann the latest name to join Marvel’s new mutant team.

Asa Germann Auditioned for Cyclops First

Germann did not originally go after the role of Angel. The 28-year-old actor first auditioned for Cyclops, the team leader role that eventually went to Kit Connor. Marvel Studios executives were reportedly so impressed with Germann’s audition that they offered him a different part: Angel.

The situation is not new for Marvel. Tom Hiddleston famously auditioned for Thor before landing the role of Loki. Now Germann is getting a similar second chance.

“Love this! Little brother doing big things” — Patrick Schwarzenegger wrote on social media, reacting to his former Gen V co-star’s casting.

Schwarzenegger and Germann played brothers Luke and Sam Riordan in Gen V. The show ran for two seasons on Amazon Prime Video before being cancelled. Germann also appeared in two episodes of The Boys Season 4 and played Lucas Bowden in Scream 7.

Who Is Angel in the X-Men Comics

Angel is one of the founding members of the X-Men. He first appeared in X-Men #1 in 1963, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

Warren Worthington III comes from a wealthy family. He has large, white feathered wings that allow him to fly at speeds of around 70 miles per hour. His body is built for flight, with hollow bones, enhanced eyesight, and a respiratory system that handles high altitudes.

In the comics, the villain Apocalypse later replaced his feathered wings with metal ones that could fire projectiles. This darker version of the character is known as Archangel.

Marvel describes Angel’s abilities this way: his entire anatomy is adapted for flight, with hollow bones, a body nearly devoid of fat, and eyes that can withstand high-speed winds. He can also heal quickly and can heal others through blood transfusion if the donor is compatible.

Angel has appeared in two X-Men films before. Ben Foster played him in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). Ben Hardy played the Archangel version in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016).

Full X-Men Reboot Cast List

Marvel Studios announced the main cast at D23 in August 2026. Kevin Feige brought the actors onstage at the Disney Entertainment Showcase panel. Here is everyone confirmed so far:

  • Sadie Sink as Jean Grey
  • Kit Connor as Cyclops
  • Asa Germann as Angel
  • Inde Navarrette as Rogue
  • Samara Weaving as Emma Frost
  • Christopher Abbott as Professor X
  • Maya Boyd as Storm
  • Adam Driver as Mister Sinister

Sadie Sink first played Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which released in July 2026. The film introduced her character as a young mutant dealing with pain and anger, not as a straightforward villain.

“I think a great cast is coming together, and I think people are going to be really excited about it when it’s all announced,” Sadie Sink said in comments cited by Deadline.

Director Jake Schreier has confirmed that Jean Grey is the lead of the X-Men reboot. Adam Driver will play the main villain, Nathaniel Milbury, also known as Mister Sinister.

Filming is expected to begin in 2027. Sadie Sink confirmed the production timeline in an interview with Vanity Fair.

This is the first standalone X-Men film made directly by Marvel Studios after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019. The older Fox X-Men films featured actors like Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen. Several of those actors are set to return in Avengers: Doomsday in December 2026, but the new X-Men film will feature a completely fresh cast.

Schreier has said the new film will be “recognizably different” from the previous franchise and will explore parts of the X-Men universe that earlier movies did not handle well.
