Marvel Studios is taking a new direction with its upcoming X-Men reboot. The movie now brings in the creative minds behind two of television’s biggest recent hits. Director Jake Schreier has confirmed that Lee Sung Jin, the creator of Netflix’s Beef, and Joanna Calo, a writer and co-showrunner on FX’s The Bear, are working on the script. This move has fans excited about what these award-winning storytellers will bring to the mutant universe.
Schreier, who directed Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, shared the news during a recent interview with Collider. He explained that both Lee and Calo have joined the project to work on a new draft. The trio previously worked together on *Thunderbolts** and the first season of Beef, where Schreier also served as a director.
“They have come in and are working on a draft right now, which is really exciting to be able to put that group of people together again.” – Jake Schreier
Why Marvel Chose the ‘Beef’ and ‘The Bear’ Team for X-Men
The decision to bring in Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo signals that Marvel wants a very specific tone for the X-Men. Both writers are known for creating stories that balance heavy emotions, sharp humor, and intense personal conflict.
Beef became a massive hit for Netflix because it turned a simple road rage incident into a wild, genre-bending story. The show mixes drama, comedy, and moments of near-horror while exploring deep human flaws. The Bear is famous for its stressful, fast-paced look at a struggling kitchen, focusing heavily on character relationships and trauma.
Schreier explained that this style fits the X-Men perfectly. He noted that the original X-Men comics are not just about superheroes fighting villains. They are filled with personal drama, romantic issues, and deep life struggles.
“When you go back and read X-Men [comics], there’s ideology, but also interpersonal drama, almost of a soap opera quality. Having writers who understand both how to drive ideology from personal stakes, if we get that right, that’s what will feel most honest to what X-Men can be.” – Jake Schreier
Fans of the animated series X-Men ’97 recently saw how well this approach works. That show proved that audiences love the mutants not just for their powers, but for their messy relationships and identity crises.
Current Status of the MCU X-Men Reboot Script
The writing process for the X-Men reboot is still active. Schreier described the project as being in the development phase. Before Lee and Calo came on board, other writers had tried to work on the script.
Michael Lesslie, known for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, had written a previous version. Aaron Rabin and Zach Dean also worked on earlier drafts. Bringing in the Beef and The Bear team suggests that Marvel is doing a significant rewrite to get the tone right.
Joanna Calo has a strong history with Marvel already. She co-wrote the screenplay for Thunderbolts*, so she understands the studio’s workflow. She also has credits on acclaimed shows like *BoJack Horseman* and Hacks. Lee Sung Jin serves as the creator and showrunner of Beef, which swept the Emmy and Golden Globe awards in its first season.
