A new historical romance drama is starting to take shape in China, and fans are already taking notice. The Road to Glory, also known by its Chinese title Gui Luan (ๅฝ’้ธพ), has begun filming with a popular lead cast and a story full of political ambition and complex relationships. The show is an adaptation of a popular web novel and is set to join the lineup of major period dramas on Tencent Video and its international platform, WeTV.

The project brings together actor Zhang Linghe and actress Lin Yun for the first time as the main leads. Zhang Linghe returns to the historical drama genre, while Lin Yun is stepping into a role described as more ambitious and morally complex than her past characters. The story is set in a fictional historical period and follows the tense, evolving relationship between a man who rises to power and a princess who has lost her kingdom.

The Core Story And Main Characters

The drama tells the story of Xiao Li, a character who begins with nothing and fights his way up from the streets to eventually become the Prince of Wei in the Northern Realm. His journey is shaped by war and a relentless will to survive, making him a rugged and strategic figure.

His path crosses with Wen Yu, a princess whose kingdom has been destroyed. She is not a typical romantic heroine; her primary drive is not love but restoration and power. A defining character trait is her clear ambition, summed up in the line, “I want soldiers. I want power.”

The relationship between Xiao Li and Wen Yu is central to the drama. It begins with hostility and deep mistrust. Their bond is expected to develop through conflict, with plot points hinting at betrayal, shifting loyalties, and even a dynamic where the male lead temporarily holds the heroine captive. This suggests a romance that will be intense and potentially dark, evolving slowly from a place of tension rather than instant affection.

Production Team And Supporting Cast

The drama is being directed by Chu De Jian, who previously directed the drama Hard to Find. Overseeing the script is head writer Zou Yue, who is known for her work on the political intrigue elements of the popular series Love Like the Galaxy. This combination has led to expectations of a well-crafted narrative that balances personal relationships with larger power struggles.

Joining the main leads is a supporting cast that includes actress Huang Yi, who will play the burdened crown princess Jiang Yichu. Actor Zhang Xiaochen takes on the role of Xiao Li’s sworn elder brother. Other confirmed cast members include Gu Zicheng and Zuo Xiaoqing.

Filming Status, Release Window, And Where To Watch

Filming for The Road to Glory is currently underway. The production is shooting at the Hengdian World Studios, a major hub for Chinese film and television productions. While an exact premiere date has not been announced, the drama is expected to be released sometime between late 2026 and early 2027.

The drama will air on Tencent Video in China. For international audiences, it will be available on WeTV, Tencent’s international streaming platform. WeTV typically provides official English subtitles and releases episodes on a weekly schedule as the show airs in China. It is expected to be available in high definition for global viewers.

Early Fan Reactions And Online Buzz

Even in its early filming stage, the drama has generated discussion online. The announcement of the lead pairing drew a mix of excitement and cautious curiosity from fans. Some viewers are enthusiastic about Zhang Linghe taking on another major historical role and are optimistic about the plot’s blend of romance and political strategy. Others have stated they are more interested in the story’s potential and the director’s vision than the specific casting choice.

Early behind-the-scenes photos and short clips from the set have been circulating on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter). These clips, which show the actors in costume and interacting during breaks, have been used by many fans to point out apparent good chemistry between Zhang Linghe and Lin Yun. This has helped ease some of the initial doubts about their pairing.

Set photos also suggest the drama will have a specific visual style. Instead of a brightly colored, glossy look common in some romances, the aesthetics appear more grounded and gritty. Zhang Linghe’s costumes reflect a battle-worn, practical look for his character, while Lin Yun’s styling shows a restrained elegance fitting for a fallen royal.
