The fifth episode of Beef Season 2 delivers the most emotional punch of the series so far. Titled “I Am Killing My Flesh Without It,” this episode moves away from the blackmail and scheming to focus entirely on a marriage falling apart. The disappearance of a beloved family dog becomes the breaking point for Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan’s characters, leading to a conclusion that offers no way back.
The episode opens with a normal morning for Josh and Lindsay. That peace breaks when Lindsay realizes their dog Burberry is missing. Panic sets in quickly as the couple notices a door left open. Instead of working together, they immediately start pointing fingers. Each blames the other for the mistake. The argument quickly moves beyond just the missing dog and brings up old wounds and past mistakes. This opening shows a couple who has lost the ability to communicate without hurting each other.
The Search for Burberry Reveals Deep Cracks in the Marriage
The search for Burberry takes up most of the episode. Josh and Lindsay try everything to find their dog. They check with neighbors, look through security footage, and post about Burberry on social media. A call from a local animal shelter gives them hope, but the dog there is a similar breed, not Burberry. The shelter asks them to take that dog home in case Burberry does not return. Lindsay agrees, but she is heartbroken and does not bond with the new dog.
This crisis shows how differently Josh and Lindsay handle stress. Lindsay stays in the neighborhood, putting up missing posters and walking the streets. She feels alone and starts to believe that no one cares about her loss. Meanwhile, Josh chooses to escape. His coworker Troy notices his behavior and takes him to Utah on a private jet for a private Hot Chip concert. Josh even joins the band on stage, but the fun does not last. He starts to spiral into an existential crisis, realizing that running away does not fix anything.
Back home, Lindsay gets an unexpected helper. Ashley shows up and insists on helping search for Burberry. This creates an awkward but interesting moment between the two women. Ashley had earlier snuck into Josh and Lindsay’s house and accidentally left the door open, leading to Burberry’s escape. Lindsay does not know this yet, so she sees Ashley’s help as genuine kindness. They talk about Ashley’s medical procedure and revisit the night they recorded the fight video. Ashley praises Lindsay and says Josh does not deserve her. The two grow closer, but the audience knows this friendship is built on a secret.
Carey Mulligan explained that the coyote scene was the main reason she wanted to join the show. Creator Lee Sung Jin pitched the entire episode around losing the dog and ending with that moment. Mulligan said:
“He pitched the whole episode around losing the dog and ending with that coyote. That was basically what made me want to do it. Shooting it was kind of crazy, but I was very motivated by the idea of that scene.”
Mulligan also shared what Lindsay’s character goes through in this episode. She explained that Lindsay had never figured out what she cared about or was good at. Her entire identity was built on her marriage. Killing the coyote becomes a turning point where Lindsay realizes the only unconditional love in her life comes from her dog.
The Coyote Attack Changes Everything
The episode’s most intense moment comes late at night. Lindsay continues searching alone and enters a forest. There she finds a coyote attacking Burberry. Without thinking about her own safety, she jumps in and fights off the wild animal. She manages to scare the coyote away, but Burberry is badly injured. Lindsay rushes the dog to the veterinary hospital in a panic.
Josh rushes to the hospital when he gets the news. He arrives to find Lindsay sitting in silence. The vet comes out with devastating news. Burberry could not be saved. The surgery failed. This loss hits both of them hard. The dog was more than a pet. Burberry represented the love and connection they once shared. With the dog gone, nothing is left to hold onto.
In the hospital, Lindsay speaks the words that have been building up all season. She tells Josh she wants a divorce. There is no screaming or fighting this time. Just a quiet, final statement. Josh agrees. Both of them understand that too much damage has been done. The episode ends with Josh returning to their empty home. He opens the refrigerator and drinks orange juice straight from the jug. The house does not feel like home anymore.
Mulligan spoke about what this moment means for Lindsay. She explained that the marriage is completely over, and Lindsay realizes that the only thing she feels mutual love and understanding with is her dog. Killing the coyote to protect Burberry is not just an act of love. It is the realization that she only has that connection with an animal, not with the people in her life.
