The final season of Hacks delivered one of its most intense and emotional episodes yet on May 14, 2026. Episode 8, titled “The Cube,” sees legendary comedian Deborah Vance take a dangerous risk to promote her Madison Square Garden show. Meanwhile, her manager Jimmy LuSaque faces a career-ending setback that changes everything.
The episode aired on HBO Max at 9:00 p.m. ET, marking the beginning of the final stretch of the show’s last season. With only two episodes left before the series finale on May 28, the stakes have never been higher for these characters.
Deborah’s Desperate Plan to Sell Tickets Without Saying a Word
Deborah cannot do any normal promotion because of a gag order from her legal battle with Bob Lipka. She cannot perform standup or talk to the press. Amanda from Madison Square Garden tells Deborah she needs a big announcement to sell tickets. But with no voice, Deborah has to get creative.
Her team first hires drag superstar Katya Zamolodchikova to perform as a 90s version of Deborah. The idea is simple: a drag double says the words Deborah cannot. But Katya stays completely in character as the old Deborah, refusing to go off script. She calls Deborah a “crusty old cunt,” and a fight breaks out between the two versions of the comedy icon. The plan fails fast.
Deborah then turns to The Amazing Stephen, a magician who performs in Las Vegas. She comes up with a wild plan. Stephen will pick her from the audience as a volunteer, put her inside a glass cube, and lift her high above the Strip. Then she will disappear and reappear as a hologram wearing a t-shirt with ticket information. Ava worries about this because she recently had a bad experience with a magician ex-boyfriend. But Deborah has no other options.
The Stunt Goes Horribly Wrong in the Las Vegas Sky
Everything starts fine. The Amazing Stephen performs his show at The Linq. He picks Deborah from the crowd, locks her inside the glass cube, and lifts her into the night sky above Las Vegas. Then disaster hits.
A city-wide blackout cuts all power. The crane holding the cube stops working. The fire department refuses to come because Deborah is not hurt and not a priority. She sits trapped in the glass box, suspended in mid-air, with only a walkie-talkie to talk to Ava on the ground.
Hours pass. Deborah needs to use the bathroom and ends up peeing in her shoe. She tells Ava this is the dumbest thing she has ever done, adding that she once went on a date with Saddam Hussein. The dark comedy keeps the scene from getting too heavy, but the fear in Deborah’s voice feels real.
“I’ve been trying to make my obituary less embarrassing, and now it will say I died next to a shoe filled with piss.” – Deborah Vance
Ava tries to calm her down. She tells Deborah that some of her best work happens when her back is against the wall. Deborah admits she has been trying too hard not to seem crazy. Ava replies that Deborah is crazy about her work, and that is “fucking cool.”
Deborah Turns Her Trap Into the Best Promotion Ever
Then Deborah has a brilliant idea. She asks Ava to call Mayor Jo and Danny at Channel 6. News crews arrive quickly. Mayor Jo tells reporters that Deborah might burn alive in the Vegas heat if the power stays off. Cameras point up at the cube as Deborah stumbles around, looking weak and scared.
But Deborah is not scared. She pulls out her lipstick and starts writing on the glass wall. First she writes “HELP ME,” making the crowd gasp. Then she finishes the message: “SELL TIX. DEBORAHVANCE.COM.” The crowd starts cheering. Deborah does her clown dance, fully owning the moment. A helicopter shines a spotlight on her, broadcasting the whole thing live to viewers at home.
When the power finally returns, the crane lowers Deborah safely to the ground. She sits in an ambulance getting checked by paramedics. Her phone rings. It is Amanda with the news: Madison Square Garden sold out in ten minutes. Deborah smiles and refuses a sports drink because she needs to stay bikini ready for a vacation with Ava.
Jimmy and Kayla’s Company Gets Crushed by a Lawsuit
While Deborah floats above Las Vegas, Jimmy and Kayla deal with their own nightmare. Randi tells them that Kayla’s father, Michael, is suing Schaefer & LuSaque for $30 million. The lawsuit claims emotional distress from the Bruno Fox arrest.
Kayla and Jimmy go to confront Michael at his Latitude office. Michael makes them an offer. If they let Latitude absorb their small agency, he will drop the lawsuit. He gives them 24 hours to decide.
Later, on the road back to Vegas, their electric car dies because Kayla forgot to charge it. Stranded in the dark, the two friends push the car while talking about their future. Kayla does not want to give in to her father. She says he has bullied her her whole life, and now he is doing the same to her “best friend.”
“But then Latitude gets to be the winners.” – Kayla
Jimmy explains that going back to Latitude is the right move for their clients. They cannot get work anymore because everyone blacklisted them. He says he got into the business to help talent, and joining Latitude is the only way to keep protecting Deborah and Ava. Kayla admits she got into the business just to hang out with Jimmy.

The next day, Jimmy, Kayla, and Randi go back to Latitude. Michael agrees to protect Kayla and Randi’s jobs. But he says the company cannot afford to put another straight white man in a senior leadership role.
The final scene shows Jimmy working in the mailroom. He sorts envelopes and delivers packages to desks where he once sat as a boss. One of the parcels is a copy of Variety magazine. Deborah Vance smiles from the cover. The headline celebrates her selling out Madison Square Garden and mentions her return to Latitude management. Jimmy smiles too, but the moment breaks hearts.
Deborah’s crazy risk paid off. She won big by turning disaster into a spectacle. But Jimmy, who did everything the right way, lost his company, his office, and his career. Hacks Season 5 Episode 8 shows that chaos gets rewarded in show business while responsibility gets punished.
The final two episodes of Hacks will air on May 21 and May 28 on HBO Max.
