Netflix has officially greenlit a new limited series set in the Bridgerton universe, and this time, the story is going back to where it all began. The streaming giant announced on Thursday, October 8, 2026, that a prequel focused on the early life and romance of Lady Violet Bridgerton and her late husband, Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, is in development at Shondaland. The untitled series will be the second spin-off from the hit Regency-era drama, following the Emmy-winning Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story from 2023.

What the Violet Bridgerton Prequel Is About

The new limited series will chronicle the early life of a young Lady Violet and tell the story of her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, the parents of the eight Bridgerton siblings. A press release from Netflix describes the project as “similar to the massive global hit Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” in its approach to exploring a beloved character’s past.

Violet, played by Ruth Gemmell in the main series, has long been the warm and watchful matriarch of the Bridgerton family. She has spent years guiding her children through their own romantic journeys, while her own love story with Edmund has largely remained in the background—until now. The prequel will show how Violet and Edmund met, fell in love, and built the family at the heart of the franchise.

There is existing source material for the series. Author Julia Quinn wrote a short novella titled Violet in Bloom, which tells the love story of Violet and Edmund. The story follows Violet Ledger from age eight, when she first encounters a ten-year-old Edmund during a visit to Sussex, through to their reunion at a London ball years later. While Shonda Rhimes is known to take creative liberties with the source material, the novella provides a foundation for the upcoming series.

Shonda Rhimes Returns to Write and Showrun

Shonda Rhimes will serve as co-writer, showrunner, and executive producer on the prequel alongside Nicholas Nardini. This marks the first time Rhimes has written for a show since she created Queen Charlotte in 2023. Nardini previously worked with Rhimes on Queen Charlotte, Scandal, and Inventing Anna.

Tom Verica, who directed and executive produced Queen Charlotte, will return in the same roles for the Violet prequel. Betsy Beers, Rhimes’ longtime Shondaland partner, will also serve as an executive producer.

Rhimes had previously hinted that a Violet-focused story was on her mind. Speaking on Craig Melvin’s podcast Glass Half Full in March 2026, she said, “I’ve always said that I thought, if we were going to do [another spinoff], Violet would be a great person to tell the story about, the Bridgerton mom. So, yeah, that’s a possibility”.

How Netflix Announced the News

The announcement arrived in signature Bridgerton style. Shondaland shared a message on Instagram written as a letter from Lady Whistledown, the show’s fictional gossip columnist. The message read: “The love match that started it all shall soon be yours to see, dear reader. This author shall be sure to inform you of any updates. Until then… Yours Truly, Lady Whistledown”.

Author Julia Quinn also shared the news on social media with a similar note. Her post stated: “Dearest Gentle Reader, this author writes to you with most exciting news… The time has come for us to turn our attention to the Matriarch of our beloved Bridgertons. A new series, chronicling the romance of a young Violet and Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, is underway”.

Who Are Violet and Edmund Bridgerton

Edmund Bridgerton is the father of the eight Bridgerton children: Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory, and Hyacinth. At the start of the main series, Edmund has been dead for nearly a decade. His death, caused by a bee sting, is central to the emotional journey of his eldest son, Anthony, in the second season. The episode “A Bee In Your Bonnet” showed the moment Edmund died in Violet’s and Anthony’s arms while Violet was pregnant with Hyacinth.

Despite his limited screen time, Edmund’s presence looms large over the series. His deep love with Violet is the standard against which all the Bridgerton siblings measure their own romances. The prequel will give audiences a chance to see that love story unfold firsthand.

Casting for Young Violet and Edmund

Casting for the young versions of Violet and Edmund has not been announced yet. Ruth Gemmell has played Violet in the main series across four seasons, while Connie Jenkins-Greig portrayed a twelve-year-old Violet in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. Fans have already begun sharing their dream casting ideas on social media, though no official announcements have been made.

Fan Reactions to the Violet Prequel Announcement

The response from Bridgerton fans has been overwhelmingly positive. On social media, many expressed disbelief that the spin-off was actually happening. One fan wrote on X, “Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine y’all would actually give us this omfggg”. Another commented on Shondaland’s Instagram post, “Violet Bridgerton, you deserve all the world”. A third fan added, “Bestie, shut the drawing room door!!!! Are you kidding me? This is amazing”. On ABS-CBN, one fan wrote, “SCREAMING!!! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG!” while another said, “THIS IS EVERYTHING TO ME!”.
