After years of speculation and fan wishes, a Rick and Morty movie is officially happening. Series co-creator Dan Harmon confirmed the news on May 18, 2026, putting an end to all the rumors that have circled the popular Adult Swim show for years.

The confirmation came after details started leaking online. Harmon was already talking with CinemaBlend about the upcoming ninth season when the leak happened. Instead of dodging questions, he decided to confirm everything right there.
Jacob Hair Will Direct the Rick and Morty Movie
The movie will be directed by Jacob Hair, who currently serves as the supervising director on the TV series. Hair joined the Rick and Morty team during season four and has become a key part of the show’s creative backbone.
Harmon did not hold back when talking about why Hair got the job. He told CinemaBlend that the team never even considered looking outside for a director.
โHe is an absolute, to say rock star is honestly feels like trivializing it because that implies like some kind of flash in the pan, kind of exciting. I mean, Jacob has it as he came onto our team. It was like adding a pillar to it.โ – Dan Harmon
Harmon compared Hair to Donald Glover, saying he does not think there is any limitation to what Hair can do behind the camera. The decision to let Hair direct was described as the “dream” scenario rather than hiring someone from outside who did good work on other animated projects.
What the Rick and Morty Movie Will Look Like
Dan Harmon already has a clear idea of what fans can expect from the movie. His plan is simple but effective.

โMy philosophy would be to just take a Rick and Morty adventure, and spend a bunch of extra money on it and make it 90 minutes long,โ Harmon explained. โNot to try to earn its feature status by virtue of canonical dramatic tone shifts or anything like that, but rather to just make it a super badass episode of Rick and Mortyโ.
This approach keeps the movie true to what made the show popular in the first place. No unnecessary drama or forced changes to justify the longer runtime. Just a bigger, better version of the chaotic sci-fi adventures fans already love.
Warner Bros. is working with the team to make this movie happen. While no release date has been announced, the project is in early development stages.
Season 9 Arrives Before the Rick and Morty Movie
Fans do not have to wait for the movie to get new Rick and Morty content. The ninth season premieres on May 24, 2026, on Adult Swim.
This season will be the second full season without original co-creator Justin Roiland, who left the show in 2023. New voice actors Ian Cardoni (Rick) and Harry Belden (Morty) took over the main roles and have continued the series without major issues.
The show has already been renewed through season 12, so there is plenty of Rick and Morty content coming regardless of when the movie arrives.
