Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali has a new movie coming to theaters this fall. The film titled Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother will open first in New York and Los Angeles on September 25, 2026. Orion Pictures, which is part of Amazon MGM Studios, will then expand the release to more cities on October 2 and October 9.
The movie marks a reunion between Ali and director Bassam Tariq. The two were earlier set to work together on Marvel’s Blade reboot before Tariq left that project. Now they have teamed up for this original action thriller.
Mahershala Ali Plays a Religious Hitman in Crisis
Ali takes on the role of Latif, a man living two completely different lives. By day, he sells perfume from his car to support his family. By night, he works as a hitman. The character is deeply religious, which creates a constant conflict between his faith and his violent job.
The story picks up after Latif’s wife dies. He then begins a dangerous trip across Houston to protect his children from threats closing in around him. The movie also explores how his beliefs start to fall apart under the pressure.
A trailer shown at CinemaCon in April 2026 gave audiences a first look at the story. The footage showed Ali as a single father struggling to fill his late wife’s shoes while hiding his deadly secret. One scene featured John Cho’s character warning Latif that the police would take his children away if they discovered his real job.
Star-Studded Cast Joins Ali in the Film
The movie brings together a group of well-known actors. John Cho, known for the Star Trek movies and the horror film Afraid, plays a key role. Giancarlo Esposito, famous for playing Gus Fring on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, also stars in the film.
Tramell Tillman, who broke out as Mr. Milchick on Apple TV’s Severance, joins the cast as well. Other actors include Abubakr Ali, Laith Nakli, Tiffany Boone (voice of Sarabi in Mufasa: The Lion King), Adia, and Jahleel Kamara.
Bassam Tariq wrote the script and also produced the movie alongside Lucan Toh and Babak Anvari of Two & Two Pictures. The title of the film comes from a well-known Islamic teaching that stresses the importance of mothers.

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother will open on September 25 alongside several other new releases. Bleecker Street’s Cannes title Victorian Psycho comes out the same day. Paramount will release David Ayer’s new movie Heart of the Beast starring Brad Pitt. Disney is putting Avengers: Endgame back in theaters for a special run. Universal also has an animated comedy called Forgotten Island opening that weekend.
The platform release strategy means the film will start in just two cities. This approach allows the studio to build word-of-mouth before sending the movie to theaters across the country. If the film performs well in New York and Los Angeles, more people will get to see it in the following weeks.
Mahershala Ali won his two Oscars for Moonlight (2016) and Green Book (2018). He most recently starred in the Netflix hit Leave the World Behind, which became one of the most-streamed movies on the platform. He will also appear in Jurassic World Rebirth opposite Scarlett Johansson, which hits theaters on July 2, 2026.
