The latest episode of Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- shows Natsuki Subaru going through his toughest mental breakdown as he dies multiple times and loses trust in everyone around him at the Pleiades Watchtower.
The episode, which aired on June 3, 2026, takes viewers on a dark trip inside Subaru’s mind. He gets stuck in a nightmare where he cannot tell what is real anymore. After several painful deaths in one single loop, he wakes up with a terrifying message carved into his own hand that reads “Natsuki Subaru Was Here.”
Subaru Tries to Escape the Tower But Falls Into a Trap
The episode starts with Subaru running outside the tower hoping to get away from all the bad things happening to him. But he only stays outside for a few seconds before a giant sand creature attacks him.
Just when it looks like the creature will eat him, something else kills the beast. Subaru then gets pulled into the sand and falls into a dark chamber filled with bones of dead animals. He walks around for what feels like hours until he finds a wall he cannot break through. When he finally breaks it, he ends up right back where he started – at the front of the tower.
This escape attempt leads nowhere. Subaru realizes he cannot run away from his problems. The tower keeps pulling him back no matter what he does.
Paranoia Takes Over as Subaru Finds His Friends Dead
After returning to the tower, Subaru loses his mind completely. He climbs the stairs laughing like a crazy person. He starts believing that someone inside the tower is killing him, so he decides he will kill everyone first before they can kill him.
But when he goes looking for his friends, he finds something much worse. He sees Ram, Julius, Meili, and others already dead. Their bodies lie around the tower in a bloody mess. The sight makes Subaru vomit. The only two people he cannot find are Beatrice and Emilia. This leaves him with more questions than answers.
The anime shows Subaru’s mental state breaking down through shaky camera work and disturbing sound effects. Viewers feel his fear and confusion as he walks through the dark tower surrounded by death.
Patrasche Gives Everything to Protect Subaru
One of the most emotional moments comes when Subaru finds his ground dragon Patrasche. He picks up a broken sword and tries to hurt her. But Patrasche does not fight back. She just stands there taking his anger.
Then a dark fog creature appears and starts chasing them. Patrasche jumps in front of Subaru and takes multiple hits from the creature. She keeps protecting him even as she gets hurt badly. Right before the time loop resets, Subaru screams that he does not want to die. Patrasche saves him from falling, but she falls to the ground and dies.
This moment shows how much Subaru loses in every loop. His loyal companion gives her life to protect him, and he has to watch it happen over and over.
The Shocking Ending Changes Everything
The time loop resets again. Subaru wakes up next to Emilia and Beatrice. But this time he does something different. He keeps quiet about his memory loss because he thinks talking about it might get him killed again.
He talks carefully with Julius and Shaula, asking small questions to find clues without giving himself away. Everything seems to be going okay until Meili whispers something in his ear. The screen goes black.
When the screen comes back, Subaru finds Meili dead next to him with marks on her neck. Then he looks at his own hand. Someone has carved “Natsuki Subaru Was Here” into his skin.
This ending raises a scary question. Is someone else using Subaru’s body to kill people without him knowing? The episode does not give any answers. It leaves viewers with chills and many questions about what is really happening inside the tower.
