Paul Bettany, Colin Firth and Asha Banks Lead Feel-Good Music Comedy It’s Alright; Protagonist Takes It to AFM

Paul Bettany, Colin Firth, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and fast-rising star Asha Banks are joining forces for a new feel-good comedy called “It’s Alright,” and the project is already making moves in the global film market. Protagonist Pictures is handling international sales for the film ahead of the American Film Market (AFM), while CAA Media Finance is representing U.S. rights. The film is scheduled to begin production in early 2027.

The story centers on a fading pop star, a long-lost daughter, and the music that brings them back together. With a script co-written by Bettany himself and a soundtrack from a BAFTA-winning producer, “It’s Alright” is positioning itself as a warm, music-driven comedy with strong commercial appeal.

What the Film Is About

“It’s Alright” follows Peter Sayer (played by Paul Bettany), a fading pop star who is on the edge of financial ruin. A bombshell letter pushes him to meet his 19-year-old daughter, Georgie, who has no idea he exists. Georgie is played by Asha Banks, a young actor and musician who is also writing original songs for the film.

Peter watches Georgie perform in her hometown and is struck by her raw, electrifying talent. In a blind panic after the performance, he poses as a music producer and takes her back to London with the promise of collaborating on her demo. As their creative partnership grows, Georgie ends up helping Peter turn around his struggling comeback. The story then puts Peter in a tough spot: an industry mogul backing him pushes him away from his musical vision, and he must choose between commercial success and protecting the magic he and his daughter created together.

Director Scott Stewart described the film’s core in a statement:

“At its heart, ‘It’s Alright’ is a story about second chances and the extraordinary power of music to bring people together. Paul and I wanted to tell a story that is funny, moving and full of life, about two people who find their way back to themselves through each other.”

The Cast and the Characters They Play

The film brings together a mix of established stars and emerging talent.

• Paul Bettany stars as Peter Sayer, the ageing pop star at the center of the story. Bettany also co-wrote the script with director Scott Stewart. The two have worked together before on films like “Legion” and “Priest”.
• Asha Banks plays Georgie, Peter’s estranged daughter. Banks is an English actress and singer whose recent credits include “My Fault: London” and “Your Fault: London”. She has also released three EPs and has over 45 million Spotify streams to date. Banks will write and perform original songs for the film.
• Colin Firth and Gugu Mbatha-Raw are also set to star, though specific details about their roles have not been disclosed.

The Music Behind the Movie

Music is a central part of “It’s Alright.” The original soundtrack will be produced by Marius de Vries, a BAFTA-winning music producer whose credits include “La La Land,” “Moulin Rouge!” and “CODA”. Universal Music will release the soundtrack.

While the film is not a traditional musical, it is described as being filled with original songs performed by Banks, Bettany, and other artists in the cast. Banks is also writing original songs for the film, adding a layer of authenticity to her role as an aspiring singer-songwriter.

Who Is Making the Film

“It’s Alright” is being produced by Raindog Films and Pacesetter Productions. The producing team includes Trish D Chetty and Ged Doherty for Raindog, and Jessica Rhoades for Pacesetter. Executive producers are Alison Mo Massey, Paul Bettany, and Hélène Theodoly, along with Dave Bishop, George Hamilton, and James Pugh from Protagonist Pictures.

Raindog Films is co-founded by Colin Firth and music industry veteran Ged Doherty. Pacesetter Productions is a writer-driven production company with credits including the BAFTA and PGA award-winning series “Black Mirror”.

Sales and Release Information

Protagonist Pictures is launching international sales for “It’s Alright” ahead of the American Film Market (AFM). CAA Media Finance is handling U.S. rights.

Dave Bishop, CEO of Protagonist Pictures, said in a statement:

“We’re thrilled to be launching sales on ‘It’s Alright’ at AFM which has all the ingredients to be an instant classic and connect with audiences worldwide. Filled with heart, emotion and incredible original songs, Paul Bettany and Asha Banks will bring to life these two lost souls who save each other through their music.”

Production is scheduled to begin in early 2027. A release date has not been announced. The film will be sold to international buyers at AFM, with CAA handling the U.S. market. The soundtrack will be released by Universal Music.
