Netflix’s Dead-End Job turns the nightmare of debt into literal monsters. The eight-episode Korean series, led by Lee Jae-wook, follows a broke young man who takes temp jobs that pay 50 to 200 times the minimum wage. The catch? Each shift can kill him. The show premiered worldwide on October 30, 2026, and its final two episodes answer the biggest question hanging over the story: what happened to Byeon Hyeok-jun’s father, and can he be saved? Here is a complete breakdown of every episode, the father’s fate, and the finale’s open ending.
What Is Dead-End Job About?
Byeon Hyeok-jun (Lee Jae-wook) is a 30-year-old man drowning in 140 million won (about $100,000) of debt. A landlord scam and bad stock bets leave him standing on a bridge over the Han River, considering ending his life. A flyer stuck under the bridge advertises Spider Staffing Agency, a temp agency offering cash-paying part-time work at impossible wages. Desperate, Hyeok-jun signs up. He quickly learns the truth: the agency sends workers to places where the barrier between the human world and a supernatural realm is thin. The high pay is danger money. Most workers do not survive their shifts.
The agency is run by Mr. S (Lee Hee-joon), a calm man who never forces anyone to take a job. He simply offers money to people who need it. Hyeok-jun’s sister, Byeon Ji-yoon (Kim Min-ha), and a mysterious investigator named Eum Yeon-joo (Go Min-si) get pulled into the agency’s secrets alongside him. The series mixes horror, dark comedy, and a sharp critique of a job market that treats desperate workers as disposable.
Every Episode Breakdown
Episode 1: Convenience Store Rules
Hyeok-jun takes a night shift at a convenience store for 50 times the minimum wage. A notebook on the counter lists strange rules: do not enter the storage room if you hear noises, and use the cross inside to deal with non-human things. His co-worker Choi Hee-dong (guest star Choi Hyun-wook) is not what he seems. Hee-dong turns into a monster made of rats. A creature with a woman’s face and spider legs waits in the refrigerator. Hyeok-jun survives until sunrise using a broken cross as a weapon. He earns 4 million won. Mr. S calls the nightmare a “honey job”.
Episode 2: A Journey with a Pierrot
Hyeok-jun works a pharmaceutical company event for 100 times the pay. The job comes with one rule: never lose sight of the clown. A violent Pierrot mime eats an entire gimbap, foil and all, and turns a manager into a severed head. Hyeok-jun discovers the Pierrot reacts to genuine sadness. Showing it empathy is the only way to survive. The episode introduces the show’s core idea: these monsters are not random. They respond to human pain.
Episode 3: Milkman Vlog
A friend collapses, and Hyeok-jun needs hospital money. He takes a milk delivery job paying 200 times the minimum wage. The building is a maze where every door is unit 444, and an elevator slams shut like a guillotine. A black fog turns people to dust. Hyeok-jun disappears into a white void, texting his sister: “If you can’t reach me, go to Spider Staffing”.
Episode 4: Midnight Fantasy Cinema
Ji-yoon takes a night shift at a movie theater to find her brother. She faces a customer who will slash her mouth with an awl if she misses his movie trivia. She fights back with a stun gun and a spray-can flamethrower. The episode shows that Ji-yoon is not a passive side character. She is just as willing to enter the supernatural world as her brother.
Episode 5: Clinical Trial
Hyeok-jun steals another applicant’s spot in a hospital clinical trial to rescue a friend. The danger is not the pills. It is the water. A leech-like creature enters his body and crawls out of his nose. He yanks it out and throws it at a researcher. The siblings escape, but their friend Byeong-cheol stays behind. He says leaving without pay would be the same as dying. Ji-yoon asks Hyeok-jun never to disappear “like Dad did”.
Episode 6: The Walls Don’t Talk
Hyeok-jun finds his father’s old notebook. It lists jobs: tunnel construction at 50 times, quarry at 100 times, construction site at 200 times, and then “last one.” He follows the trail to a construction site paying 1,600 times the minimum wage. Inside, he finds a tower of workers’ bodies stacked floor after floor. A foreman confesses that a shaman told them to build a tower of human bones to make money. The foreman reveals that Byeon Min-su went through a door and never came back.
Episode 7: Neo World After Dark
Yeon-joo’s past is revealed. Forty years ago, she was a factory worker at Gyeongil Textiles. When workers tried to form a union, they were met with violence. Yeon-joo hid in a locker and woke up decades later. The factory site is now an amusement park called Neo World, and the door back to the other world is there. Hyeok-jun takes an amusement park job to find his father. The night parade turns into a slaughter. People in fairy-tale costumes kill each other. Mr. S tells Ji-yoon that Yeon-joo is a monster from the other side.
Episode 8: Last Carnival
The finale takes everyone to the abandoned amusement park. Hyeok-jun relives his worst memories in a haunted house. He sees his father on a game show called Challenge! A Father’s Miracle. A noose drags him up and drops him. He faces his father’s face shifting into monsters and then into himself. He escapes and reaches the door Yeon-joo told him about.
What Happens to Byeon Hyeok-jun’s Father?
Byeon Min-su disappeared 20 years ago. The series reveals he did not abandon his family. He took jobs from Spider Staffing Agency to support them. Like his son, he became trapped in the other world. In the finale, Hyeok-jun finds him, but the reunion is not a rescue. Min-su does not recognise his son at first. Years in the other world have reduced him to a shadow of himself. He is sitting in a room, clutching a small bundle of money he earned, still thinking only of his family.
Min-su gives Hyeok-jun the money and tells him to take it home. He warns his son to leave quickly. He cannot go with him. His shadow on the wall is monstrous, a sign that the other world has claimed him. In one reading of the finale, Min-su sacrifices what remains of his soul to break the contract binding Hyeok-jun to the agency. In every version of the ending, the result is the same: Hyeok-jun cannot save his father. Min-su remains trapped in the other world. He is a lost soul, not a living man who can return to his family.
Does Byeon Min-su Survive?
No. The father does not survive in any way that allows him to return home. He is already dead in the ordinary sense. What Hyeok-jun finds is a trapped remnant, a soul consumed by the agency’s system. Min-su’s final act is to give his son the money and push him to escape. Hyeok-jun has to accept that his father is gone for good before Ji-yoon pulls him back to the human world. The show does not leave room for a happy reunion. The father’s fate is the emotional cost of the story: the debt cycle took him, and it almost took his son too.
What Happens in the Finale?
The confrontation at the door defines the ending. Mr. S argues that sending a few desperate workers to die keeps the boundary between worlds intact. He says he made their hopeless lives useful. Hyeok-jun refuses that logic. He argues that the workers took those jobs because they wanted to live, not because they wanted to die. Yeon-joo wants to open the door and let the other world destroy everything. She believes the system is too corrupt to fix. Mr. S shoots her several times. Hyeok-jun pushes past him and opens the door.
Creatures pour out. Yeon-joo turns on Mr. S, breaks his hands, and throws him into the portal before disappearing into it herself. She apologises to Hyeok-jun for using him. Hyeok-jun is caught in the void and sees his father one last time. Ji-yoon pulls him back from the threshold. The siblings close the door together and stop the immediate apocalypse. Fireworks go off in the distance.
The Final Scene and the Open Ending
The supernatural threat is stopped, but the real world is unchanged. Hyeok-jun uses his earnings to pay off his debt. He returns to ordinary part-time work. In a corporate interview, he is asked if he is willing to sacrifice his personal life for the company. He gives a tired, knowing smile. Ji-yoon receives a job offer from Kyungil Group, the corporation that secretly funded the agency. Hyeok-jun gets a pre-recorded message from Mr. S, who was believed to be dead. Mr. S offers him the manager position at Spider Staffing Agency and asks whether he would run things differently. The series cuts to black before Hyeok-jun answers.
