The famous director Steven Spielberg has spent his whole career making movies about visitors from other planets. Now, at 79 years old, he says he is certain that aliens are real and have already visited Earth. This belief drove him to write and direct his latest film, Disclosure Day, which he calls his most realistic alien movie yet.

Spielberg admits he has never seen a UFO himself. He laughs about this fact, saying, “Isn’t that terrible? I deserve that! I deserve a sighting.” Even without a personal experience, the filmmaker says the public evidence has become too strong to ignore. He points to government reports, congressional hearings, and many documentaries as proof.

“Based on the circumstantial evidence of everything that I’ve gathered throughout my whole life, everybody I’ve listened to and every documentary I’ve ever watched and all the testimonies in Congress that I’ve heard, I absolutely think that they have been here, and they are here.”

The Truth Behind ‘Disclosure Day’

Disclosure Day is not a sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, even though many fans thought it might be. The film stars Josh O’Connor as a whistleblower who finds proof that the government has hidden evidence of aliens for decades. Emily Blunt plays a meteorologist who discovers she has a special way to talk to these beings. The cast also includes Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, and Eve Hewson.

Spielberg says this movie is different from his older alien films. He calls Close Encounters “science speculation” and E.T. a fantasy. But Disclosure Day is based on real events he has studied. He wrote the first 50 pages of the script on his iPad because his handwriting has gotten “so bad” with age. He then gave those notes to writer David Koepp, who worked with him on Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds.

Why Spielberg Changed His Mind After 50 Years

For many years, Spielberg would only say that he hoped aliens existed. That changed after the July 2023 House subcommittee hearing on UAPs (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena). During that hearing, former intelligence officer David Grusch said the government has hidden a secret program to recover crashed alien spacecraft. The Pentagon has not confirmed these claims, but the testimony had a big effect on Spielberg.

The director says he has spent years watching documentaries, listening to eyewitnesses, and reading reports. This “overwhelming” amount of information finally convinced him. He also credits his father, Arnold Spielberg, who was an electrical engineer. His father always told him that intelligent life exists somewhere in the cosmos.

A Story About Secrets and the Truth

The plot of Disclosure Day focuses on a group of people trying to release secret files to the public. Spielberg describes it as a “chase movie” where powerful people try to stop a worldwide data dump of alien evidence. The title refers to a fictional day when all secrets about extraterrestrials are finally told to everyone on Earth.

Josh O’Connor, who plays the lead role, says he believes something is out there, but he is in no hurry to find out. “The sense of mystery used to be so strong and we’ve lost that now,” the actor said at the UK premiere.

Release and Streaming Information

Disclosure Day arrives in theaters on June 12, 2026. The movie will be released by Universal Pictures in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and India on the same date. It will also play in IMAX theaters.

For viewers in Europe and other regions, local release dates may vary by one or two days. The film is expected to hit major streaming platforms later in 2026 or early 2027, though no official streaming date has been announced yet.
