The Rookie: North is bringing more familiar faces from the original series. At New York Comic Con 2026, it was confirmed that Melissa O’Neil (Lucy Chen) and Eric Winter (Tim Bradford) will appear in the upcoming spinoff. They join Nathan Fillion, who is already set to appear as John Nolan in the spinoff’s pilot episode.

The announcement was made during the Rookie universe panel on Sunday, October 11, 2026. The spinoff, titled The Rookie: North, will debut on ABC on January 6, 2027, airing right after The Rookie season 9 premiere.

What the Spinoff Is About

The Rookie: North follows Alex Holland, played by Jay Ellis. Alex is a middle-aged man who believed his midlife was not worthy of a crisis. After a violent home invasion changes his view, he decides to join the Pierce County Police Department in Washington as its oldest rookie.

The show is set in the Pacific Northwest, giving it a different feel from the original Los Angeles-based series. Creator Alexi Hawley has said the new location brings a unique atmosphere. “I knew North being up in the Pacific Northwest was gonna feel inherently different,” Hawley explained.

Who Is Crossing Over and Who Is Joining

Melissa O’Neil and Eric Winter will bring their characters Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford to the spinoff. Their crossover was hinted at by Hawley earlier. “I do think we need to get Chenford in the mix up in North at some point in season 1,” he said, referring to the popular pairing of Tim and Lucy.

Nathan Fillion will appear as John Nolan in the spinoff’s pilot. Hawley confirmed that crossover episodes are planned. “There’s a bit of crossover with Nathan in the pilot,” Hawley stated. “We might also bring a couple of other people up during the course of the season”.

On the original series, The Rookie season 9 is adding new guest stars. Troian Bellisario will play Stephanie Monroe, described as Nolan’s new rookie and a single mother rebuilding her life after a divorce. Dulé Hill joins as Lt. Hughes, a new watch commander. Molly Kunz will appear as an EMT.

For audiences outside the United States, streaming details may vary. In the US, both series are available on ABC and Hulu. The spinoff will also be available on Hulu on Disney+ for subscribers.

The season 9 premiere will be a two-part event. The story picks up from the season 8 finale cliffhanger, where Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen were kidnapped. The sizzle reel shown at NYCC gave a first look at the rescue mission.

Fan reaction to the spinoff has been mixed. Some are excited about the expansion of the franchise. “I am only going to watch The Rookie North just so I don’t have to wait until season 9 of the original rookie,” one fan commented.

Others have expressed concern about what the spinoff means for the original show. “Noooooo. Just gimme season 9 instead,” one person wrote. The previous spinoff, The Rookie: Feds, was cancelled after just one season, which has made some viewers cautious about the new project.

The Cast of The Rookie North

The spinoff features a mix of new and returning talent. Jay Ellis leads the cast as Alex Holland. The ensemble includes Janet Montgomery, Karen Fukuhara, Chris Sullivan, Froy Gutierrez, Mya Lowe, and Malik Watson.

Alexi Hawley created the spinoff and serves as showrunner for both series. He has spoken about the challenge of making the new show feel distinct while still connecting to the original. “It’s dynamic and creepy in a way that stands alone,” Hawley said about the Pacific Northwest setting.

A New Time Slot for The Rookie

The Rookie is moving to a new night. Season 9 will air on Wednesdays at 9 PM, a change from its previous Monday slot. This marks the eighth time period change for the series.

The move places The Rookie and The Rookie: North back-to-back, creating a two-hour block on ABC. This scheduling is designed to help launch the new spinoff and make crossovers easier to do.
