The brave men and women of Firehouse 51 are getting ready for a new season, but the team may look very different when Chicago Fire Season 15 premieres on NBC this fall. The Season 14 finale ended with a massive explosion that left multiple characters trapped inside a burning warehouse. Fans have been waiting for months to find out who survived.

NBC officially renewed Chicago Fire for its 15th season back in March 2026. The show will return as part of the 2026-2027 broadcast season alongside Chicago P.D. (Season 14) and Chicago Med (Season 12). While the network has confirmed the show is coming back, the cast lineup is still filled with question marks. Some stars have signed new deals, others are waiting for answers, and a few may be moving on for good.

Taylor Kinney and Miranda Rae Mayo Lock in New Deals for Season 15

Two of the biggest stars from Chicago Fire are officially returning. Taylor Kinney, who plays Lieutenant Kelly Severide, and Miranda Rae Mayo, who plays Firefighter Stella Kidd, both signed new contracts to continue on the show. This marks Kinney’s 15th season on the series and Mayo’s 12th season, as she first joined in Season 4.

The contract news came out on May 13, 2026, through Deadline, giving fans some relief after the intense cliffhanger. Kinney was reportedly the last of the group to close his new pact, similar to previous negotiations. Mayo has become a central part of the show as Kidd, and her return ensures that the leadership at Firehouse 51 remains strong.

Andrea Newman Exits as Showrunner After 14 Seasons

Behind the camera, a major change is happening. Andrea Newman, who worked on Chicago Fire for its entire 14-season run, is stepping down as showrunner. Newman joined the series after the pilot as co-executive producer. She was promoted to executive producer in Season 6, became co-showrunner in 2021, and took over as sole showrunner two years later.

Newman released a statement about her departure, saying,

“Working at Chicago Fire, with the absolute best cast and crew in the business, has been the highlight of my career. Like so many others, I was inspired to get into TV writing because of Dick [Wolf], so what a thrill it’s been to work with him and the amazing Wolf team.”

Victor Teran, who has been on Chicago Fire since Season 10 as co-executive producer, will take over as showrunner for Season 15. This leadership change could bring a new direction for the series, though fans will have to wait and see what Teran has planned.

Dermot Mulroney’s Return as Chief Pascal Is Uncertain

Dermot Mulroney, who plays Battalion Chief Dom Pascal, may not return full-time for Season 15. Mulroney joined the series in 2024 after Eamonn Walker scaled back his role as Chief Wallace Boden. However, scheduling conflicts with another project could keep him away.

Mulroney recently shared on The Tangle podcast that The Hunting Wives Season 3 is in development and expected to begin filming this fall. He said,

“Season 3 is in prep. I think they’ve got writers in the room, and they’re cooking up a third season already. And that should begin filming in the fall.”

The timing of the two productions could complicate his return to Chicago Fire. Mulroney was already absent from the final few episodes of Season 14, with Rob Morgan appearing as Battalion Chief Hopkins during his hiatus. While there is a chance Mulroney appears in the Season 15 premiere, his full-time status remains unclear.

Other Returning and Expected Cast Members

Several other familiar faces are expected to return to Firehouse 51. Hanako Greensmith (Paramedic Violet Mikami) and Jocelyn Hudon (Paramedic Lyla Novak) are both confirmed to come back.

The following cast members are expected to return, though their official confirmations are still pending:

  • David Eigenberg as Lieutenant Christopher Herrmann
  • Christian Stolte as Randall “Mouch” McHolland
  • Joe Miñoso as Joe Cruz
  • Brandon Larracuente as Sal Vasquez

These characters were all in danger during the Season 14 finale explosion. Herrmann and Val were trying to escape down an aerial ladder when a fireball engulfed them. Mouch and Cruz were trapped inside the warehouse when it exploded. Viewers will have to wait for the Season 15 premiere to learn their fates.

Daniel Kyri, who played Darren Ritter, left as a series regular in Season 14. However, he is expected to return briefly for Season 15 to give his character a proper ending. Eamonn Walker (Wallace Boden) stepped down as a regular at the end of Season 12 but continues to appear as a recurring guest, so fans may see him in a few episodes.

Michael Bradway’s Future as Damon Remains Unclear

Michael Bradway, who plays Damon, may not return for Season 15. His character was transferred out of Firehouse 51, which already makes his return less likely. Additionally, Bradway has joined Prime Video‘s upcoming show Every Year After, which will require significant time commitment. This scheduling conflict could mean Damon’s time on Chicago Fire has ended.
