The creator behind The Walking Dead franchise has given new hope to fans waiting for one of television’s most beloved friendships to reunite.

Scott M. Gimple, the Chief Content Officer for The Walking Dead universe, recently shared an important update about Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon potentially sharing the screen again. In an interview with content creator Brandon Davis on YouTube, Gimple confirmed that plans for the reunion are still moving forward despite several production challenges.

The relationship between these two characters has been a central part of the show since its early seasons. Rick, played by Andrew Lincoln, and Daryl, played by Norman Reedus, built a strong bond throughout the series that fans still remember fondly. Their last on-screen moment together happened in Season 9, when Rick seemingly died in a bridge explosion while leading walkers away from his community.

Gimple Reveals Production Challenges for 2026

Gimple did not hide the difficulties involved in making this reunion happen. He explained that modern production methods create obstacles that were not present in earlier seasons.

“It’s very challenging for a variety of reasons, which have everything to do with 2026 production. But things change very quickly.”

The franchise head also mentioned that he has already created multiple possible scenarios for how the reunion could happen. He described these as “garden-of-forking-paths kind of plans.” This shows that the creative team has been thinking about this moment for a long time.

“It might be a minute, it might be tomorrow, I might be off at the retirement home. But I think eventually we’ll get there. There’s enough stuff to handle, source material, emotional, plot-wise, everything, that we could do something brilliant.”

Norman Reedus Says Goodbye to Daryl Dixon Role

One major factor affecting reunion plans involves Norman Reedus himself. After completing filming for the fourth season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, the actor shared a message on social media that many fans took as a farewell to his character.

“Today is my last day filming as Daryl Dixon. It has been an absolute joy playing this guy with all of you for so many years. I feel truly blessed. Sincerely.”

This post created uncertainty about whether Reedus would return to the role in future projects. However, AMC has not officially confirmed his departure from the franchise. The fourth season of Daryl Dixon is scheduled to release in the fall of 2026, with the show following Daryl and Carol’s adventures in Spain.

The Walking Dead Franchise Continues Expanding

While fans wait for the Rick and Daryl reunion, The Walking Dead universe keeps growing with new content. The franchise has expanded far beyond the original series, which ran for 11 seasons.

The Walking Dead: Dead City, featuring Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan and Lauren Cohan as Maggie, will return for its third season on July 26 in the United States. The Daryl Dixon spin-off is currently in its fourth and final season.

The recent The Ones Who Live series finally brought Rick back to the screen. This six-episode show explained what happened to Rick after the CRM kidnapped him. It showed him reuniting with Michonne and gave fans some closure on their love story.

Video Game Offers Temporary Reunion

Fans looking for a Rick and Daryl fix will not have to wait forever. The upcoming video game The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival will feature Rick, Michonne, and Daryl as playable characters. This marks the first time this trio has appeared together in over 12 years, though the game may not place them in the same scenes simultaneously.

The game adapts the All-Out War storyline from the comics and gives players a chance to control these beloved characters in a beat-’em-up style game.

Past Reunions and What They Mean

The Walking Dead franchise has delivered several emotional reunions in recent years. Michonne found her way back to Rick in The Ones Who Live. Daryl met up with Carol again in his spin-off series. Even Negan got a new Lucille in Dead City.

These successful reunions show that AMC knows how to bring characters back together in satisfying ways. The Rick and Daryl reunion would be the biggest one yet, given how long fans have waited and how important their friendship is to the show’s history.

What This Means for Walking Dead Fans

Gimple’s comments confirm that the creative team has not forgotten about this unfinished storyline. They have been thinking about it and developing plans. The main challenges appear to be production logistics and actor availability rather than lack of interest.

The franchise has shown it can overcome obstacles before. When Andrew Lincoln left the main show in Season 9, fans thought Rick’s story was over. But The Ones Who Live brought him back and gave his character a proper continuation.
