Kevin Spacey recently sat down with Bill Maher on the Club Random podcast for a nearly two-hour conversation. The Oscar-winning actor spoke openly about his sexuality, the sexual assault allegations that derailed his career, and his current standing in Hollywood. The podcast episode was released on June 29, 2026.

Spacey, known for roles in American Beauty and The Usual Suspects, has faced more than 50 individual allegations of sexual misconduct since 2017. The two-time Academy Award winner was removed from House of Cards and replaced in All the Money in the World when the accusations first surfaced.

Kevin Spacey Addresses His Sexuality and Why He Stayed Closeted

During the podcast, Maher asked Spacey why he kept his sexuality hidden for so long. Spacey explained that he was dealing with court cases, which made it difficult to have the conversations he wanted to have about his personal life.

The actor first came out as gay in 2017 when responding to Anthony Rapp’s initial allegation. That statement received heavy criticism at the time. On Maher’s podcast, Spacey admitted he kept his sexuality private for years.

“I was fiercely closetedโ€ฆ I thought I was so clever that nobody knew, but of course kind of everybody knew,” Spacey told Maher.

Maher responded that he never understood why Spacey kept it a secret. The comedian noted that being openly gay has become widely accepted in the entertainment industry.

Maher directly questioned Spacey about the multiple allegations against him. The comedian shared his honest perspective on the situation.

“I’m not going to lie to you, I go by numbers with scandals. If it’s like one person, I’m always like, I don’t know if I wasn’t in the room,” Maher said. “There’s too much smoke to be no fire”.

Spacey acknowledged that his behavior crossed boundaries at times. He used a simple fire analogy to describe the situation.

“I never said there was no fire. It just wasn’t a raging forest fire. It was a small kitchen fire that could have been put out with an extinguisher,” Spacey said.

He also admitted: “I hit on a lot of guys”.

Spacey pointed out that he has won all the court cases that went before a jury. He specifically discussed the case brought by actor Anthony Rapp.

“There are certain cases where part of something is true, but it’s been rethought, it’s been redesigned, or it’s been entirely made up, certainly in the case of Anthony Rapp,” Spacey said.

Rapp filed a $40 million civil lawsuit against Spacey, but a New York jury found Spacey not liable on all counts. Spacey claimed they proved their side by showing that Rapp’s story about what happened in a bedroom could not have occurred because Spacey lived in a studio apartment with no bedroom door.

Maher acknowledged that Spacey “should have gotten some punishment” but also noted that Spacey had “paid a lot” for his offenses. The comedian said a 10-year sentence is a serious penalty.

Kevin Spacey Says He Feels ‘Less in Jail’ and Career Is Rebuilding

Spacey discussed his current standing in Hollywood, saying he feels more accepted now than in previous years.

“I feel much more welcomed, and I think that things are moving in the direction that we hoped they were moving in,” Spacey said.

Maher asked Spacey if he was still in “show business jail.” Spacey responded that he feels less trapped than before. He compared his situation to professional sports.

“If I had been a sports figure I would have been benched for seven games. That’s what happensโ€ฆ if you’re hitting home runs, they want you on the field,” Spacey said.

“When people actually start to hear the facts, understand what we won in courts, I think people now look at this and think, maybe nine years has been enough”.

Spacey shared that he traveled across Europe in 2019 with just a backpack to feel free. He met people who were excited to see him and said he never faced negative comments from people in real life.

The actor also revealed that he is looking for love, stating: “I don’t have a steady boyfriend but I’m in the market”.

Career After Allegations and Upcoming Projects

Since the allegations emerged, Spacey has worked on smaller independent projects and European productions. He recently appeared in films like Peter Five Eight and The Awakening.

Spacey also mentioned a film called Dear Mr. Vidal, in which he played Gore Vidal. The movie was shot in Italy in 2017 but Netflix decided not to release it. Spacey expressed hope that the streaming platform would reconsider or pass it to another distributor like Paramount.

He has five upcoming projects listed on IMDb, including The Awakening, Melodies in the Forest, Gore, The Tenth Planet-The Red Sister, and Holiguards Saga.

Spacey attended the Cannes Film Festival recently and received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the amfAR Cannes Gala last year, where he gave a speech about blacklisting in Hollywood.
