Anya Taylor-Joy is set to enter Middle-earth in “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” as an elf named Seren. The actress recently opened up about her casting for the first time, sharing a deep personal connection to the role. Taylor-Joy admitted that stepping into the shoes of an elf feels surprisingly natural to her.
The 30-year-old actress spoke with Rotten Tomatoes in a video shared on July 1, 2026. She did not hold back her excitement about joining one of the most beloved fantasy franchises in film history. Taylor-Joy, who has starred in major blockbusters like Furiosa and Dune, said this role is something she has been waiting for her entire career.
“I feel like I’ve been an elf my whole life, so it feels very validating to go and actually be able to do it as a job,” Taylor-Joy said.
The actress also shared her admiration for the film’s director, Andy Serkis. Serkis is not only directing the movie but also returning to voice the iconic character Gollum. Taylor-Joy called him a “wonderful man and a wonderful, innovative creator”. She added that she is a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings and feels honored to be part of its world.
“Being able to be a part of this world and to inhabit this character is a dream come true,” she said.
Anya Taylor-Joy Plays a Brand New Elf Character Named Seren
Taylor-Joy will not be playing a character from J.R.R. Tolkien’s original books. Her character, Seren, was created specifically for The Hunt for Gollum. Seren is described as a Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm. She serves as a trusted and lethal agent of King Thranduil, the Elvenking played by Lee Pace in The Hobbit films.
The character of Seren is expected to be a new ally to Aragorn on his quest. The film takes place between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies. The story follows Aragorn and Gandalf as they search for Gollum to learn more about the One Ring.
Star-Studded Cast Joins Taylor-Joy in Middle-earth
Taylor-Joy joins an impressive lineup of both returning and new cast members. Ian McKellen is coming back as Gandalf, and Elijah Wood returns as Frodo Baggins. Lee Pace will reprise his role as King Thranduil.
Newcomers to the franchise include Kate Winslet as Marigol, Jamie Dornan as Strider (Aragorn), and Leo Woodall as Halvard. Dornan takes over the role of Aragorn, which was originally played by Viggo Mortensen.
The film is being produced by the Oscar-winning team behind the original trilogy. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Zane Weiner are producing. Walsh and Boyens also wrote the screenplay alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.
