Doctor Doom is set to arrive as the biggest threat the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever faced in Avengers: Doomsday, hitting theaters on December 18, 2026. The villain, played by Robert Downey Jr. , commands magic, science, and an army of Doombots. Yet a spell cast in a Spider-Man movie years ago could hold the key to his defeat—or his total control.
A fan theory gaining traction points directly to the Runes of Kof-Kol, the memory-wiping spell from Spider-Man: No Way Home. The idea is simple but powerful: a spell designed to make the world forget one person could be the one thing Doom never saw coming.
What the Runes of Kof-Kol Actually Do
Doctor Strange used the Runes of Kof-Kol to make everyone on Earth forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. The spell was meant to fix a botched memory spell, but it went wrong and tore open the multiverse. In the end, Strange cast it fully, and the whole world—including Peter’s closest friends—forgot he existed.
The spell is described in Marvel lore as a “standard spell of forgetting,” but Wong warned that it “travels the dark borders between known and unknown reality” and is “too dangerous”. That danger is exactly why the spell matters for Doomsday.
Theory One: The Spell Hides Spider-Man from Doom
One popular theory suggests that because the Runes of Kof-Kol erased Peter Parker from everyone’s memory, Doom’s magic cannot detect him. If Doom rewrites reality or creates his Battleworld, Peter would be one of the few people who slips through the cracks.
The theory gained fuel from a BossLogic artwork shared by Robert Downey Jr. that showed a chessboard with a king piece (Doom) surrounded by destruction—and a spider standing directly opposite it. The Russo Brothers also shared an image of Spider-Man holding the Infinity Stones and the same king chess piece.
If this theory holds, Spider-Man becomes Doom’s blind spot. The spell that was once Peter’s greatest sacrifice could become the Avengers’ last advantage.
Theory Two: Doom Uses the Spell to Control Battleworld
A darker theory flips the idea. Instead of shielding Peter, Doom could use the Runes of Kof-Kol to make everyone forget the worlds that existed before Battleworld.
“Doom wouldn’t just rule the world. He would be the one who would control what everyone would remember about it.”
If Doom can make heroes and civilians believe Battleworld is the only reality they have ever known, resistance becomes nearly impossible. Steve Rogers might not remember being Captain America. The X-Men might think they always lived alongside the Avengers. The spell that once erased one identity could be scaled up to erase the memory of an entire multiverse.
Doctor Strange’s Role in Doomsday Is Complicated
Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed in early 2025 that Doctor Strange will not appear in Avengers: Doomsday. The actor said script changes tied to the shift from Kang to Doom led to Strange being written out of the film. However, Cumberbatch also said Strange will be “quite central” to Avengers: Secret Wars, the follow-up film.
That does not rule out the spell’s importance. Strange does not need to be on screen for the Runes of Kof-Kol to matter. The spell already exists in the MCU. Doom, a sorcerer and scientist, could study it, replicate it, or force someone else to cast it. The rules of magic set in No Way Home remain active whether Strange is present or not.
Rumors have also swirled that Strange could secretly appear as a masked, wizard-like figure codenamed “Boris” alongside Doom. A patch on a jacket worn by Downey at San Diego Comic-Con featured the name “Boris,” and leaked promotional material reportedly showed a figure in Latverian clothing using a Sling Ring. Marvel has not confirmed any of this, and the images have been called into question for possible AI enhancement.
Battleworld Is the Endgame Doom Is Building Toward
Everything in the Multiverse Saga is pointing toward Battleworld, the patchwork planet Doom creates in the Secret Wars comics. In the source material, Doom steals the power of the Beyonders and stitches together pieces of destroyed Earths into one world he rules as a god.
The MCU has already planted the seeds. Avengers: Doomsday is described as a story where heroes from three universes collide, facing an “existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered”. If Doom succeeds in building Battleworld, the Runes of Kof-Kol give him a way to make that world permanent—by making everyone forget anything else ever existed.

Filming Updates Suggest Big Secrets Are Still Hidden
More footage for Avengers: Doomsday was still being shot in February 2026, less than a year before release. David Harbour, who plays Red Guardian, said he was returning to London to film additional material.
Filming scenes closer to release is a way for Marvel to keep spoilers under control. The later a scene is shot, the shorter the window for set photos or leaks to reveal surprise cameos or twists—exactly the kind of reveals that a Runes of Kof-Kol twist would depend on.

The Spell That Could Break Doom
Doctor Doom’s greatest weapon has always been control. He controls magic, technology, and—if his Battleworld plan succeeds—reality itself. The Runes of Kof-Kol are a direct threat to that control. If one person remembers the truth, Doom’s kingdom of forgetting collapses.
Spider-Man may be that person. Or the spell may be Doom’s to command. Either way, a “standard spell of forgetting” from a Spider-Man sequel is now sitting at the center of Marvel’s biggest Avengers story in years. The answer will arrive when Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters worldwide on December 18, 2026.
