Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay is making his final big-screen appearance. His last film, Jana Nayagan, will release in theatres worldwide on July 23. The production house KVN Productions made the official announcement on July 15, putting an end to months of uncertainty and delay.

The film was originally scheduled to release on January 9, 2026, during the Pongal festival. However, a series of problems pushed the release back by nearly seven months. These included a long certification battle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), legal interventions, and even a piracy leak.

Vijay himself confirmed the release date on his Instagram page. He shared a new poster showing him in a police uniform, holding a sword. The caption simply read, “#JanaNayaganFromJuly23”. The poster also credits the film as an Anirudh musical, referring to composer Anirudh Ravichander.

Why Was Jana Nayagan Delayed for So Long?

The delay of Jana Nayagan became one of the most talked-about topics in Tamil cinema. The makers submitted the film to the CBFC on December 18, 2025. Initially, a five-member examining committee recommended a U/A 16+ certificate and suggested some cuts. The production team made the changes and resubmitted the film.

But just days before the planned January 9 release, the CBFC chairperson decided to refer the film to its revising committee. This unexpected move stopped the certification process. The makers went to the Madras High Court but could not get immediate relief. They had to postpone the release indefinitely.

The legal battle continued for months. At one point, a single judge directed the CBFC to issue a U/A 16+ certificate. However, a division bench later set aside that order and sent the matter back for fresh consideration. The makers eventually withdrew their petition against the CBFC.

The film finally received an ‘A’ certificate from the CBFC on July 9. According to the certification document, the film has a runtime of 183 minutes and 11 seconds (3 hours and 3 minutes).

Piracy Added to the Film’s Troubles

During the certification delay, Jana Nayagan suffered another major setback. In April 2026, a high-definition version of the uncertified film leaked online. Initial reports said only a few scenes had surfaced. But it later turned out that the entire film had leaked.

The Tamil Nadu police arrested multiple people in connection with the leak. Reports say that over 1.2 crore (12 million) people watched the film online before it even got a censorship certificate. The makers issued legal notices and sought court intervention to stop the circulation.

What We Know About the Film’s Release

Jana Nayagan will release in India on July 23. However, the release timing will differ across states. According to sources, theatres in Tamil Nadu will not have special 5 am shows. The first show in the state will begin at 9 am. Meanwhile, theatres in Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana will start screenings as early as 5 am.

For overseas audiences, the release will happen a day later. The UK distributor, Ahimsa Entertainment, confirmed that the film will release in UK cinemas on July 24 in its uncut version. The distributor’s announcement read: “THE HONOURABLE CHIEF MINISTER OF TAMIL NADU. C JOSEPH VIJAY. #JanaNayagan in UK cinemas July 24 – uncut, 15-rated. All the action, all the mass, all the Thalapathy craze, exactly as it was meant to be seen. One last time.

Industry sources say distributors were initially told about a July 24 release. But the makers moved the date forward to July 23. Advance bookings have already opened in markets like Australia and several European countries.

Star-Studded Cast and Crew

Jana Nayagan is directed by H Vinoth. The film is produced by Venkat K Narayana under the banner KVN Productions.

The film features a strong ensemble cast:

  • Vijay in the lead role
  • Pooja Hegde
  • Bobby Deol
  • Mamitha Baiju
  • Gautham Vasudev Menon
  • Prakash Raj
  • Narain
  • Priyamani

On the technical side, the film has music by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Sathyan Sooryan, editing by Pradeep E Ragav, and production design by V Selvakumar.

Jana Nayagan is also a partial remake of the 2023 Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari, which starred Nandamuri Balakrishna and Sreeleela.

The Significance of Vijay’s Final Film

This film carries huge importance because it is Vijay’s last movie before he moves fully into politics. Vijay, who now serves as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, won the state assembly elections earlier this year.

The irony is not lost on fans. The film was first planned to release before the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. But because of the delays, it will now reach audiences after Vijay has already taken office as Chief Minister.

Some people had argued that the film’s political undertones could influence voters. The case even reached the Madras High Court, with multiple hearings delaying the release date. Now that the elections are over, the film is finally coming to theatres.

Fan Reactions

Fans have been waiting for this moment for months. When Vijay shared the new poster and release date on social media, his followers flooded the comments with excitement.

One fan wrote, “One last dance”. Another comment read, “Finally we are waiting Anna”. The emotional connection between Vijay and his fans is clear, as they prepare to see their star on the big screen for the final time.
