Netflix is closing out its adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s famous novel One Hundred Years of Solitude with a unique release plan. The streaming service will drop seven episodes on August 5, 2026, followed by a special feature-length grand finale on August 26, 2026. This two-part release strategy gives the story a proper ending that the creative team believes a standard episode could not deliver.
The first part of the series launched in December 2024 with eight episodes. It showed the rise of the fictional town of Macondo and the early generations of the Buendía family. Many people in Hollywood thought this book could never be turned into a show or movie. García Márquez himself said no for decades because he believed a regular film could not hold his full story. Netflix worked with the author’s family to finally make it happen.
Part 2 Arrives on August 5 With Seven Episodes
One Hundred Years of Solitude Part 2 will start streaming on August 5, 2026. The first release includes seven episodes that continue the story of the Buendía family and the town of Macondo. These episodes cover fifty years of events that have not been told yet in the series.

Laura Mora and Carlos Moreno share directing duties for Part 2. Mora directs episodes 1, 2, 5, and 6, plus the grand finale. Moreno takes episodes 3, 4, and 7.
The show’s writing team includes José Rivera, Natalia Santa, Camila Brugés, and María Camila Arias.
Grand Finale Drops on August 26 as Standalone Movie
The biggest surprise came when Netflix revealed the ending plan. The final episode, known as the Grand Finale, will release separately on August 26, 2026. This last chapter runs like a full movie, not a regular TV episode. It plays for nearly two hours.
Netflix made this choice because the ending of the novel is too big for a standard 45-minute or hour-long episode. Laura Mora also directs this feature-length finale. She directed several episodes in Part 1 and now takes charge of closing the whole story.
“Each episode of this second part is like a film. We took the series to another level aesthetically, narratively, and through sound and music to build a much more cinematic and emotional ending. After living in that house and in that town for three years, we felt that closing this journey had to feel just as grand, epic and cinematic.”
Francisco Ramos, Netflix’s Vice President of Content for Latin America, explained why the show needed a special finale. During writing and pre-production, the team realized a normal episode would not do justice to García Márquez’s ending.
“During the writing and pre-production of the second part of the series, we came to the conclusion that the right way to tell the novel in all its scope and ambition required a format beyond that of a standard episode, but rather a Grand Finale that would properly represent the conclusion of the Colombian Nobel laureate’s masterpiece.”
The creative team spent nearly three years building the world of Macondo, making the final chapter very personal for everyone working on the show.
Theatrical Events Planned in Colombia
Netflix is also planning special theatrical screenings of the grand finale in select cities across Colombia. The streaming service is working with Proimágenes, Colombia’s promotional entity for film, to bring these events to local audiences. This move shows how important this series is to the country where García Márquez was born and where the show was filmed.
What Happens in Part 2 of One Hundred Years of Solitude
Part 2 jumps deeper into the later generations of the Buendía family. The story follows the town of Macondo as it changes from a simple place into something darker. The curse that Úrsula Iguarán spoke about starts to take full effect.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads:
“Following the signing of the armistice, peace still does not reach Macondo. Fearful of Colonel Aureliano Buendía’s threats, the Conservatives plot an assassination attempt that —by a twist of fate— brings Fernanda del Carpio from Bogotá to the town. When she marries Aureliano Segundo, one of the bastard Arcadio’s twin sons, she gives Úrsula Iguarán her first legitimate heirs. Meanwhile, José Arcadio Segundo, the other twin, will accomplish the patriarch’s wild dreams of connecting Macondo with the world. The railroad’s arrival opens the doors to the banana company, which unleashes the town’s downfall and ultimately fulfills Úrsula Iguarán’s curse: for the lineage condemned to one hundred years of solitude were not granted a second opportunity on earth.”
The railroad’s arrival brings the banana company to Macondo, which sets off the town’s destruction. This fulfills the curse that Úrsula Iguarán spoke about: that families condemned to one hundred years of solitude would not get a second chance on earth.
New characters enter the story, including Fernanda del Carpio, who becomes a key figure in the Buendía family. The show also follows the twin brothers Aureliano Segundo and José Arcadio Segundo, who take very different paths in life.
Returning Cast and New Faces
Marleyda Soto and Claudio Cataño return to their roles as Úrsula Iguarán and Colonel Aureliano Buendía. These two characters are central to the Buendía family story.
New cast members joining Part 2 include:
- Julián Román as the Buendía twins
- María Adelaida Puerta as Amaranta Buendía
- Ángela Cano as Petra Cotes
- Carla Baratta as Fernanda del Carpio
- Daniella Reyes as Remedios, the beauty
- Juanita Molina as Meme
Other new faces include Emmanuel Restrepo, Estefanía Piñeres, Emiliano Pernía, Laura Taylor, and Obeida Benavides.
Claudio Cataño spoke about the weight of playing Colonel Aureliano Buendía:
“Macondo and its host of characters, who I truly feel as my own blood, are universal, but at the same time so unique — so from Colombia, so beautifully tragic that it is impossible not to be trapped in this world.”
