What Happens in Part 2

Fernanda marries Aureliano Segundo, one of Arcadio’s twin sons, giving Úrsula Iguarán her first legitimate heirs. Meanwhile, the other twin, José Arcadio Segundo, works to fulfill the patriarch’s dream of connecting Macondo with the outside world.
The railroad arrives, opening Macondo’s doors to the banana company. This event sets off the town’s decline and fulfills Úrsula Iguarán’s curse.

Colonel Aureliano Buendía remains at the center of the story. At the beginning of Part 2, he returns to Macondo with his troops and takes control of the town. He arrests General Moncada, the Conservative chief, and faces opposition from his own mother, Úrsula, who rallies for Moncada’s release.
The Colonel rejects the President’s offer of an armistice but eventually agrees to lay down arms. Consumed by guilt, he attempts suicide by shooting himself in the chest, but a doctor had marked the wrong spot, and he survives. He lives out his remaining years in Macondo.
Úrsula Iguarán continues to anchor the narrative. She encounters seventeen boys who are Colonel Aureliano’s children and provides money to their mothers. As generations pass, she becomes both witness and memory for Macondo.
The twins – Aureliano Segundo and José Arcadio Segundo – take on distinct paths. Aureliano Segundo enters a relationship with Petra that brings complications. José Arcadio Segundo becomes involved in a workers’ strike at the banana company that ends in a massacre. He is the sole survivor, but no one else in Macondo remembers the event.

Episode 7 serves as a crucial turning point. Titled “It Rained For Four Years, Eleven Months and Two Days,” the episode shows how relentless rain impacts Macondo. The future that once seemed bright grows dimmer as tragic fate closes in on the Buendías. The railroad plan brings unexpected cruelty, leading to a devastating massacre.
