The new romantic comedy “Our Sticky Love” arrives on Netflix today, August 7. Jung Hae In and Ha Young star in this drama that mixes romance with action and crime.
The series follows a prosecutor who loses her memory and a boxing coach who claims to be her boyfriend. Things get complicated when a dangerous crime boss starts hunting her down.
A Love Story With a Sticky Twist
The Korean title of the drama is Ireon Yeot-gateun Sarang, which translates to “This Love Is Like Yeot.” Yeot is a traditional Korean candy that is sweet and sticky. But the word also works as slang for something that is a bit messed up.
This double meaning is at the heart of the show. Director Kim Jang Han, who previously worked on “Do You Like Brahms?” and “My Demon,” said the title is the perfect metaphor for the story. “Yeot is sweet and sticky, making it a great metaphor for the main couple’s bond,” he explained.
What Is “Our Sticky Love” About?
Ha Young plays Go Eun Sae, an ambitious prosecutor. While tracking a violent crime syndicate, she gets into an accident and loses her memory. She wakes up in a hospital in a quiet countryside village called Yeot Village.
Jung Hae In plays Jang Tae Ha, a boxing coach who claims to be her boyfriend. But there is more to his story. He left a criminal organization to start a new life. He was also Eun Sae’s first love, but she doesn’t remember him.
To protect her from his former boss, Tae Ha lies and says he is her boyfriend. The two end up living together in the village, which is lined with yeot shops. Their cohabitation sparks a sweet and sticky romance.
The Crime Boss Who Changes Everything
Heo Sung Tae, known for his role in “Squid Game,” plays Baek Sang Gil, the crime boss. He believed he had eliminated prosecutor Go Ji Won (Eun Sae’s name before her amnesia) after she discovered his weakness. When he learns she is still alive, he comes after her.
Heo Sung Tae called this his most evil villain role yet. “It does not even compare with Jang Deok-su in ‘Squid Game’,” he said.
A Colorful Cast of Characters
The village is full of interesting residents who add warmth and humor to the story. Veteran actress Kim Young Ok plays Ko Yeon Hong, a traditional malt taffy maker who has dementia. She is also Tae Ha’s grandmother.
Jeon Bae Soo and Seo Jung Yeon play the married owners of the Hong Boxing Gym. Jang Hye Jin, Cha Chung Hwa, and Kim Mi Hwa play three village women known as the “SES of Yeomae Village”.
What the Stars Say About the Drama
Jung Hae In said the unusual title first caught his attention. “When I first heard the title, I thought it was quite bold,” he said during a press conference in Seoul. “I interpreted it as a love that is like this candy. I thought the project had a sweet and sticky charm, much like yeot”.
He also loved how the story mixes different genres. “It starts out as a romantic comedy, then develops into a melodrama as the story unfolds,” he said. “With elements of thriller and noir added to the mix, and eventually action as well, I found it appealing because it’s such a multifaceted project”.
Jung described his character as the most devoted romantic partner he has played. “I thought it was admirable to see how he always does his best to protect the person he loves, regardless of the circumstances,” he said. He added that Tae Ha has never been in a relationship before, so he can be awkward and clumsy.
Ha Young said the bold title made her curious about the story. She called the drama “not a cliche, but a classic”. “I feel that it is a romantic comedy that captures patient love in a long time,” she said.
A Genre-Bending Experience
Director Kim Jang Han said he mixed crime drama with the rom-com to show Tae Ha’s romantic side. “We needed dramatic situations to demonstrate Tae-ha’s romantic decisions and actions,” he said.
Jung Hae In noted that filming felt like working on two different projects. “On set, we used to joke that scenes with Go Eun-sae (Ha Young) felt like a pure romance, but the second she wrapped for the day, it turned into a gritty noir,” he said.
