MGM+ has dropped the official trailer for ‘American Hostage’ , the upcoming anthology series starring Jon Hamm. The psychological thriller is based on the true story of a 63-hour hostage crisis that played out live on Indianapolis radio in 1977.
The series comes from Shawn Ryan, creator of ‘The Night Agent’ , and Eileen Myers. It premieres on September 20, 2026, with two episodes on MGM+. The eight-episode first season will release weekly through November 1, 2026.
The True Story Behind the Series
‘American Hostage’ dramatises the real-life ordeal of Fred Heckman, a popular radio reporter for WIBC in Indianapolis. In 1977, a man named Tony Kiritsis walked into a mortgage office and attached a sawed-off shotgun to the neck of businessman Dick Hall with a wire. Kiritsis then demanded to be interviewed on Heckman’s live radio program.
The standoff lasted 63 hours. Kiritsis kept Hall hostage while negotiating live on air with Heckman, who found himself caught between his duty as a journalist and his role as a human being trying to save a life. The trailer shows Heckman wrestling with the decision to give Kiritsis airtime before finally saying: “Hello Tony. You are live and on the air.” That moment opened the door to three days of chaos and confrontation.
The series is based on the first season of the acclaimed scripted podcast of the same name, which also featured Hamm voicing Heckman. The podcast was released in February 2022 and reached No. 7 on Apple Podcasts in the United States.
Jon Hamm Leads a Stacked Cast
Jon Hamm, best known for ‘Mad Men’ , reprises his role from the podcast as Fred Heckman. The actor also serves as an executive producer on the series.
The cast includes Giovanni Ribisi as hostage-taker Tony Kiritsis. Kristoffer Polaha plays Dick Hall, the businessman who was held captive with a shotgun wired to his neck. Polaha, who previously worked with Hamm on ‘Mad Men’ , told PEOPLE that he prepared for the role by reading Hall’s book about the incident and watching archived news footage.

Additional cast members include William Jackson Harper as Ben Hairston, a member of Heckman’s radio team; Mireille Enos as Barbara Heckman; Jonathan Tucker as FBI Special Agent Cormac McNally; and Kat Cunning as Ibby Hall.
Adam Arkin and Nina Lopez Corrado serve as directors on the series.
From the Creator of ‘The Night Agent’
The series is co-created by Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers. Ryan, known for ‘The Night Agent’ and ‘S.W.A.T.’ , developed the project under his overall deal at Sony Pictures Television. The studio acquired the rights to the podcast after its 2022 release.
Ryan has described Hamm’s character as different from the actor’s previous roles. In an interview, Ryan said: “Fred believes in the mission of journalism, speaking truth to power and is a strong family man. In many ways, I think this is the most moral man I’ve seen Jon Hamm play.” He added that the trouble for Fred comes “when his personal life intersects with this crisis.”
Myers noted that the series won’t be an exact remake of the podcast. The show will explore Heckman’s past, including his relationship with his father, “and how some painful experiences there inform his current dilemma.”
The series is envisioned as an anthology, with each season focusing on a different hostage case.
The Trailer: A Tense Radio Drama
The newly released trailer shows Hamm’s Heckman hosting his radio show when a call comes in from Kiritsis, who announces he has a 12-gauge shotgun aimed at a man’s neck. “I’m a mad, mean mother, and if anyone makes a move, he will die right here,” Kiritsis says in the teaser.
The trailer builds tension as Heckman’s team debates whether to give Kiritsis airtime. By the end, Heckman realises he is no longer just reporting the story — he has become the story.
The series will have its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before its television debut.

‘American Hostage’ premieres with a two-episode debut on Sunday, September 20, 2026, exclusively on MGM+. The remaining six episodes will air weekly, with the finale scheduled for Sunday, November 1, 2026.
The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television. Executive producers include Ryan, Myers, Hamm, Sharon Hoffman, Connie Tavel, Marney Hochman, Shawn Christensen, Gabriel Mason, Jen Roskind, and directors Adam Arkin and Nina Lopez Corrado.

A Story That Has Been Told Before
The Kiritsis hostage case has previously been dramatised in other projects. A film titled ‘Dead Man’s Wire’ , directed by Gus Van Sant and starring Bill Skarsgård as Kiritsis, recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival. That film has been acquired by distributor Row K Entertainment.
But ‘American Hostage’ offers a different perspective — one centred on the radio reporter who became the nation’s connection to a bizarre and terrifying standoff. For Hamm, who voiced the role in the podcast, bringing the story to the screen marks a return to a character he already knows well.
