The upcoming DC series Lanterns is set to premiere on August 16, 2026, bringing the Green Lantern mythology to HBO audiences. While Kyle Chandler ultimately landed the role of Hal Jordan, the casting process was not as straightforward as fans might assume. The co-creators of the series have now shared why the Friday Night Lights star was initially ruled out during the early stages of casting.
The DC live-action show Lanterns follows veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart as they investigate a murder case in a small Nebraska town. The mystery uncovers something much larger, with consequences that could reach far beyond Earth. Kyle Chandler plays the experienced Lantern, while Aaron Pierre portrays the rookie John Stewart.
Why the Creative Team Thought Chandler Would Not Join
Damon Lindelof, who co-created the series alongside Chris Mundy and Tom King, revealed that the team had always pictured Chandler as the ideal choice for Hal Jordan. Lindelof described the actor as having the right qualities for the role.
“He’s got the gruff energy, the cynicism, also the nobility, the humor. He’s the entire package.”
However, there was one major problem. Chandler had never worked on superhero projects or genre-heavy productions before. The creative team assumed he would not be interested in stepping into a comic-book role, especially one connected to the DC Universe launch.
Lindelof explained that they initially believed they would never get Chandler for the part. The actor had not grown up reading comic books. In fact, Chandler was more interested in Donald Duck as a child and had no connection to Green Lantern mythology. Hal Jordan first appeared in 1959, six years before Chandler was born, as an ordinary human who gains god-like abilities when wearing the power ring.
Chandler’s Initial Hesitation
When Chandler’s representatives sent him the script for Lanterns in September 2024, his first reaction was not excitement. He opened the pilot, read some of it, and then set it aside. The actor had not shown interest in joining any superhero universe.
The turning point came when Chandler decided to share the script with his family. He asked his wife Kathryn and daughter Sydney, who stars in the FX series Alien: Earth, to read it with him. They did a living-room table read, taking on different characters.
“When we finished, they both literally, at the same time, jumped up off the couch and pointed at me and said, ‘You have to do this.’”
Chandler promised his wife and daughter on the spot that he would take the role. From that moment, he felt excited about the project.
The actor also had a connection to Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max’s head of original programming. Aubrey had previously run Peter Berg’s production company during the Friday Night Lights years. This relationship made the decision easier for Chandler.
Age Concerns from Co-Showrunner
Chris Mundy, who serves as showrunner, shared another reason why Chandler was not initially considered. The character of Hal Jordan needed to be portrayed by someone who was still vital and commanding.
Mundy explained that they did not want to cast someone who looked like they were ready to retire. However, when they thought of Chandler, it became a breakthrough moment for the team.
The casting process involved many strong options. Mundy had to select 25 names from the first list, narrow it down to 7 or 8, and finally choose from a shortlist of 3. Chandler emerged as the right choice for the role.
The Character and Series Plot
In Lanterns, Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan, an experienced Green Lantern who has been serving as an intergalactic officer for years. Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart, a new recruit who is still learning how to use his power ring. The two are brought together when a murder in the American heartland requires their attention.
The series takes a grounded approach to the superhero story. Hal Jordan serves as a mentor figure, training John Stewart while they work together to solve the mystery. The show explores the dynamic between the seasoned Lantern and the rookie.

“You’re trying to figure out if your game plan is going to work with this guy, what he’s going to pull out, what that dance is going to be.”
The actor added that they quickly found their rhythm during shooting.
“We’re just starting to really make fun of each other, find each other’s weak spots within the characters, and how to jab at each other and piss each other off. And once you find that, you know you can [create a moment].”
Chandler’s Career Before Lanterns
Before joining Lanterns, Kyle Chandler built a strong reputation through various television and film projects. He is best known for playing Eric Taylor in the NBC drama Friday Night Lights from 2006 to 2011. His performance in the role earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2011.
Chandler also starred in Bloodline, Manchester by the Sea, Game Night, Mayor of Kingstown, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Grey’s Anatomy. He has described Friday Night Lights, Bloodline, and Early Edition as three standout projects in his career. He now considers Lanterns to be the fourth.
The DC Studios Connection
Lanterns marks the third series in the DC Studios era led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The show follows the success of Peacemaker and The Penguin. The series represents a new direction for the Green Lantern mythology on screen.
The supporting cast includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, and others. Ulrich Thomsen plays the DC villain Sinestro.
