The new The Ghost in the Shell anime series delivered its most intense episode yet with Episode 6, titled “DUMB BARTER.” The episode aired on August 11, 2026, and brought Major Motoko Kusanagi face-to-face with a dangerous terrorist from her past. The attack on Section 9 and the involvement of Section 1 created one of the most personal battles in the series so far.
The episode starts with Major and her boyfriend, who works for Section 1, getting attacked. Both survive and are taken to the hospital. The person behind this attack is Toru Soma, a terrorist who has a long history with Major. This is not just another case for Section 9. This attack is deeply personal.
Major and Togusa Fight for Survival
After leaving the hospital, Major and Togusa find themselves caught in a dangerous chase. Their escape leads them to an abandoned factory where they run into a heavily armed group. What follows is a chaotic fight.
Togusa gets a much bigger role in this episode. Instead of just supporting Major from the side, he is pulled directly into the action. He manages to keep up with Major during the fight. The line between an official government operation and Soma’s personal revenge plot becomes harder to see.

The Tank Battle Steals the Show
The biggest action moment in The Ghost in the Shell Episode 6 is the fight against a massive military-grade tank. For the first time in the new series, Major is clearly outmatched. Her weapons cannot seriously damage the tank.
This forces Major to change her approach. Instead of trying to overpower the enemy, she relies on speed and strategy. She understands she cannot win the fight alone. She avoids the tank and buys time until the rest of Section 9 can reach her.
Fans have been comparing this tank battle to the one from the 1995 Ghost in the Shell film. Some viewers found the new version more cartoonish, while others enjoyed seeing the manga’s action brought directly into the new anime.
Aramaki Takes Action
Daisuke Aramaki, the chief of Section 9, gets one of his best moments in Episode 6. He usually operates from a command position. But in this episode, he personally confronts Section 1’s leadership after discovering their involvement.
Aramaki even draws a gun. This shows how seriously he takes the threat against his team. His actions prove the loyalty that exists within Section 9. While the organization operates under government rules, its members know that Aramaki will protect them when needed.
Borma and the rest of the team also help during the fight. This makes the episode feel more like a real Section 9 operation than some of the earlier episodes.
Major Confronts Soma
The most important moment of the episode comes when Major finally faces Soma. Their history gives this confrontation real emotional weight. Soma’s actions are driven by revenge. Major understands exactly why he targeted her.
But understanding his reasons does not make her forgive him. By the end of The Ghost in the Shell Episode 6, Major kills Soma in cold blood. This shows just how dangerous she can become when someone targets her or the people close to her.
The episode also reveals that Soma did not work alone. He used Section 1 as part of his operation. This puts Major in the strange position of fighting people from another government security division.

The episode became available on Prime Video starting at 11:30 PM JST on the same day. Other streaming services in Japan started showing the episode on August 12, 2026, at 11:30 PM JST.
The series releases weekly. Prime Video carries the fastest streaming release in Japan. The first season of The Ghost in the Shell has 10 episodes.

Special Episode Visual and Collaboration Artwork
The production team released a special episode visual for Episode 6 created by Mizuho Hayashi (maxilla). For each episode, different creators make posters inspired by the episode’s concepts and themes.
A collaboration illustration was also released between The Ghost in the Shell and Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia. Both anime are based on works by Masamune Shirow and Tomato Soup. Both are animated by Science SARU. The collaboration art was created by Abel Gongora, the director of Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia.

The story is set in the year 2029 in near-future Japan. Motoko Kusanagi is a full-body cyborg who leads an elite combat unit. Daisuke Aramaki recruits her and her team to form Public Security Section 9, an offensive tactical unit known as “Shell Squad”.
