For decades, fans have imagined what would happen if Spider-Man swung through the galaxy far, far away or if Darth Vader faced off against Doctor Doom. That dream is now becoming a reality. Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm have officially announced Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, a five-issue limited comic series that brings together the biggest heroes and villains from both universes for the first time in history.

The announcement, made on August 11, 2026, has sent shockwaves through the entertainment world. This crossover event is set to launch in January 2027, perfectly timed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.

Kevin Smith and David Marquez Lead the Historic Project

The creative team behind this groundbreaking series is nothing short of legendary. Kevin Smith, the famous writer, director, and actor known for his work on Daredevil, Green Arrow, and Batman, will write the series. David Marquez, known for his work on Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man and Uncanny X-Men, will provide the artwork.

Smith has been a lifelong fan of both franchises. He shared his excitement about finally getting the chance to write this story.

“Back in the early ’80s, I had a subscription to Marvel’s Star Wars comics. And as fun as it was to follow the continuing adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han, I always wished that Spider-Man or Doctor Doom could cross over into their cinematic saga. So when the opportunity arose to actually tell that story, nobody had to Force my hand! I’m ecstatic to be writing Hope Assembles for the 50th anniversary of Star Wars! Many thanks to Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm for trusting me to fly the Falcon and the Quinjet!”

Michael Siglain, Creative Director at Lucasfilm Publishing, also expressed his enthusiasm for the project.

“With Hope Assembles, Kevin Smith has written a true love letter to Star Wars, to Marvel, and to comics in general. And combined with David Marquez’s incredible art, we’ll see the heroes and villains of Star Wars team up and battle with the heroes and villains of Earth-616. Hope Assembles is exciting, unpredictable, and heartfelt. In short, it’s comics at its best, and we can’t wait for readers to experience both franchises as never before.”

What Happens When Star Wars Meets Earth-616

Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles will bring the classic Star Wars characters from the A New Hope era into Earth-616, Marvel’s main comic book continuity. This means Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca will interact with Captain America, Black Widow, Spider-Man, and the Hulk.

On the villain side, Darth Vader will join forces with Doctor Doom and other Marvel villains. The story begins when a “reality-shattering spell” transports the Star Wars characters into the Marvel Universe.

The series is set to be a five-issue monthly limited series, with the first issue arriving in January 2027. Each subsequent issue will release monthly.

A Crossover 50 Years in the Making

The connection between Marvel and Star Wars goes back to the very beginning. Marvel Comics published the first Star Wars comic book adaptation in April 1977, just one month before the original movie hit theaters. Marvel regained the Star Wars comic license in 2015 after Disney acquired Lucasfilm.

Stephen Wacker, Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief, spoke about the significance of this moment.

“Marvel and Star Wars’ histories have been intertwined for 50 years and continue to set the standard for storytelling across the world… and across the media landscape. Lifelong lovers of both Star Wars and Marvel have a lot to look forward to as we finally bring the characters together in ways fans have been dreaming about for decades!”

C.B. Cebulski, outgoing Marvel Editor-in-Chief, added that this project has been in the works for over a decade.

“It’s an idea we’ve wanted to explore since getting the Star Wars license back over a decade ago, but we knew we’d have to wait with the patience of a Jedi to make it happen. The 50th anniversary of A New Hope has finally given us the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring these two universes together, in this incredible story being told by Kevin Smith and David Marquez. Getting the call with the green light from Lucasfilm was a magical moment; it was as if Han Solo himself had called to tell me, ‘You’re all clear, kid!’”

Fans React to the News

Social media platforms exploded with excitement following the announcement. Fans from both fandoms shared their joy and anticipation for this historic crossover. Many expressed that this was a dream they never thought would actually happen.

The announcement also sparked conversations about which characters fans are most excited to see interact. The idea of Spider-Man meeting Luke Skywalker or Doctor Doom teaming up with Darth Vader has generated significant buzz across Twitter, Reddit, and other platforms.

The Comic Will Be Part of Marvel’s Official Canon

One of the most interesting aspects of Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles is that it will take place within Marvel’s mainline Earth-616 continuity. This means the crossover will officially be part of Marvel’s comic book canon.

How this fits with the fact that Star Wars exists as a movie franchise within the Marvel Universe remains to be seen. But for now, fans are simply excited to see these two massive worlds collide in a way that has never been done before.
