Emraan Hashmi‘s upcoming sequel Awarapan 2 has achieved something remarkable. The film’s advance ticket sales have already crossed the total lifetime earnings of the 2007 original movie. This happened even before the sequel hits theaters.
The original Awarapan released in 2007 and collected around ₹7.7 crore net during its entire theatrical run. The film was considered a box office failure at that time. But the sequel’s advance bookings have now surpassed that number completely.
Awarapan 2 is scheduled to release on August 14, 2026, and will clash with Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947 at the box office. The film is directed by Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Films.
Advance Bookings Cross ₹4 Crore Mark
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Awarapan 2 has sold tickets worth ₹4 crore for its opening day alone. The film has sold over 1.3 lakh tickets for release day as of Thursday afternoon.
Different sources have reported varying figures as bookings continue to grow. The Telegraph reported that Awarapan 2 recorded around ₹3.26 crore in gross bookings with approximately 1,02,470 tickets sold across 5,934 shows. Including blocked seats, the potential gross stands at around ₹5.44 crore.
Zoom TV reported that the film grossed ₹3.34 crore in advance bookings, marking a 147% increase in sales within just 24 hours. The film has sold over 100,000 tickets across the country, with the number of shows increasing to more than 6,500.
Republic World reported that as of their latest update, Awarapan 2 had sold 122,114 tickets across 6,746 shows in India, earning ₹3.84 crore.
Trade insiders estimate that total advance bookings for the film’s opening weekend and beyond exceed ₹9 crore gross (₹7-8 crore net).
Original Awarapan Was a Box Office Disaster
The 2007 Awarapan had a very different story at the box office. The film, directed by Mohit Suri, opened with just ₹79 lakh on its first day. It netted only ₹2.88 crore in its first weekend.
The film had a budget of ₹18 crore but managed to collect only ₹12-12.25 crore worldwide. It earned approximately ₹7.76 crore net in India during its entire theatrical run.
Despite the poor box office performance, Awarapan gained a cult following over the years. Viewers discovered it on home media, cable, and streaming platforms. The film is now regarded as one of Emraan Hashmi and Mohit Suri’s best works.
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh spoke about the original film’s failure. He said:
“The first part didn’t work even though it was a brilliant film. It was among Emraan’s best efforts. I remember talking to the Bhatts after the release of Awarapan. They were totally shaken and were wondering, ‘What happened?’”
He added that the film gradually developed a dedicated audience over time.
Box Office Clash With Batwara 1947
Awarapan 2 is facing a major box office clash with Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947 on August 14. Both films are releasing during the Independence Day weekend.
Batwara 1947 marks Sunny Deol’s reunion with filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi. They previously worked together on acclaimed films like Ghayal (1990), Damini (1993), and Ghatak (1996). The film is backed by Aamir Khan Productions and also stars Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, and Karan Deol.
Awarapan 2 is comfortably ahead in the advance booking race. According to trade analyst Ramesh Bala, Awarapan 2 had sold nearly 68,000 tickets and generated around ₹2.20 crore through advance sales, compared with approximately 37,600 tickets for Batwara 1947. This puts the Emraan Hashmi starrer 81% ahead in ticket sales.
The Times of India reported that Awarapan 2 collected ₹2.05 crore from advance bookings with 62,431 tickets sold across 3,684 shows. Including blocked seats, the gross advance booking collection stands at ₹3.51 crore.
Delhi-NCR has emerged as the strongest market for Awarapan 2, contributing ₹51.44 lakh through ticket sales. Mumbai follows with ₹29.84 lakh, while Pune and Bengaluru have registered ₹8.85 lakh and ₹7.18 lakh respectively.
Batwara 1947 is currently trailing with ₹53.21 lakh from 18,109 tickets sold across 3,477 shows. Including blocked seats, the total gross advance booking collection for Batwara 1947 rises to ₹1.61 crore.
Trade Predictions Favor Awarapan 2
Trade experts are predicting a strong opening for Awarapan 2. Taran Adarsh believes the film has a clear edge.
“Looking at the advance trend, Awarapan 2 definitely has an edge. Its ticket sales have been very good. There’s a huge difference between the bookings of Awarapan 2 and Batwara 1947 at present.”
Trade analyst Sumit Kadel predicted that Awarapan 2 could earn almost twice as much as Batwara 1947 on its opening day.
“As far as the opening day and weekend collections are concerned, Awarapan 2 is likely to defeat Batwara 1947 by a 2X margin. I am expecting Awarapan 2 to collect ₹13-16 crore net on Friday, with the potential to touch ₹20 crore if it gets better showcasing at single screens. The weekend could be ₹50-60 crore minimum.”
Batwara 1947 is expected to open in the vicinity of ₹7-9 crore net.
Ramesh Bala also shared his views on the clash:
“Awarapan 2 has nostalgia and a loyal fanbase on its side, while Batwara 1947 carries Sunny Deol’s formidable pull among mass audiences. Emraan Hashmi’s film could take the early lead, but Independence Day is a strong corridor for both. This is one clash where the opening may grab headlines, but word of mouth will crown the real winner.”
Cast and Crew of Awarapan 2
Awarapan 2 brings back Emraan Hashmi as Shivam Pandit after nearly 19 years. The film also features Disha Patani in a key role, along with veteran actress Shabana Azmi.
The supporting cast includes Suvinder Vicky, Vijayant Kohli, Aniruddh Rawal, Atul Kumar, and Puran Gabbi.
Shabana Azmi plays the character Nafisa in the film. Disha Patani’s character is named Zara.
The film is directed by Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Films. Pen Marudhar is handling the All India theatrical distribution.
Emraan Hashmi reportedly took home ₹10-12 crore for his role, while Disha Patani earned ₹5 crore. Shabana Azmi is reportedly getting between ₹2 crore and ₹5 crore for the project.
The film was shot across Rajasthan and South East Asia.

Strong Audience Response Driving Bookings
The advance booking response for Awarapan 2 has been very positive. The trailer generated good buzz among audiences. The film holds a U/A certificate from the CBFC.
Pinkvilla reported that Awarapan 2 sold around 20,000 tickets in the top two national chains, PVR Inox and Cinepolis, for the opening day as of August 11. The film has a very good buzz among the audience.
The film is expected to have a 100K-plus finish at national chains, potentially getting close to 125K.
Some industry observers have noted that Awarapan 2 may not get the fitting showcasing, as Batwara 1947, being distributed by PVRINOX, is getting equal shows despite a much smaller advance. This could limit its opening day somewhat.
Despite this, Awarapan 2 is expected to be Emraan Hashmi’s highest opener, potentially reaching the ₹20 crore mark on day 1. The film is also predicted to cross ₹100 crore worldwide within its opening weekend.
