Marvel Studios released the first official trailer for ‘VisionQuest’ during the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event on August 15, 2026. The footage gives fans their first proper look at Paul Bettany returning as Vision and James Spader coming back as Ultron for the first time since 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. The eight-episode series arrives on Disney+ on October 14, 2026, and serves as the final chapter of the television trilogy that began with WandaVision in 2021 and continued with Agatha All Along in 2024.
Trailer Unveiled at D23 with Bettany and Spader on Stage
Paul Bettany and James Spader appeared together on stage at the D23 event in Anaheim, California, where they introduced the first trailer for the series. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige joined them to discuss the project. The trailer shows Vision living in hiding after escaping those who tried to weaponize him. He now works at a pub and spends his nights plugged into a mental landscape where he interacts with human versions of various AI personalities from his programming.
Bettany spoke to the crowd about his character’s journey over the years. He said:
“It’s been an enormous joy playing the Vision as he’s evolved over the years. He’s been an Avenger, a father, a partner to Wanda, and he’s helped turned the tide in some fairly enormous battles. He made the ultimate sacrifice and rather inconveniently died several times, which I can tell you is an act that can make longterm financial planning difficult.”
Spader also addressed the audience, noting Ultron’s long-standing curiosity about humanity. Bettany quickly responded with a joke about Ultron’s previous plan to wipe out all humans.
Ultron Returns in Human Form After 11 Years
One of the biggest moments from the trailer is James Spader reprising his role as Ultron. The actor last played the villain in Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. In VisionQuest, Ultron appears as a human character rather than a giant robotic form. He lives inside Vision’s mind as one of several AI personalities stored in Vision’s programming.
The trailer shows Ultron in both his robotic body and a human version played by Spader. Vision has apparently kept Ultron behind a mental firewall, but keeping him contained does not mean keeping him quiet. The series explores what happens when Vision must work with his creator to survive.
Vision’s Son Tommy Maximoff Joins the Story
The trailer also introduces Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy Maximoff, also known as Speed. Tommy is the son of Vision and Wanda Maximoff, first seen as a child in WandaVision. In the series, Tommy appears as an older version of the character. The footage shows Tommy telling Vision, “I have a father, a machine…called Vision”.
A bounty is placed on Vision’s head, forcing him to go on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son or a reincarnation tied to his family history. Full Cast Includes Multiple Marvel AI Characters
VisionQuest brings back several artificial intelligence characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, all played by human actors. The cast includes:
- James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark’s former AI assistant
- Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y., the AI that replaced J.A.R.V.I.S. in Iron Man’s suits
- Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H., the AI glasses Tony Stark left behind
- T’Nia Miller as Jocasta, an AI character from Marvel Comics
- Todd Stashwick as Paladin, a morally ambiguous mercenary who targets Vision
- Faran Tahir as Raza, the Ten Rings leader from the first Iron Man film
Terry Matalas, known for his work on Star Trek: Picard, serves as the showrunner and creator of the series. The directing team includes Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, Vincenzo Natali, and Terry Matalas himself.
Series Completes the WandaVision Trilogy
VisionQuest wraps up the story that started with WandaVision in 2021. That series explored Wanda Maximoff’s grief after Vision died in Avengers: Infinity War. The follow-up, Agatha All Along in 2024, centered on the witch Agatha Harkness. Now VisionQuest focuses on White Vision, the version of the character that flew away at the end of WandaVision after regaining his memories.
The new series picks up with White Vision trying to understand who he is. He has all of Vision’s memories but did not experience them firsthand. He knows about a life he never truly lived. The trailer shows him watching Vision’s past memories on a theater screen as he tries to make sense of his identity.
What the Trailer Shows About Vision’s Journey
The trailer gives viewers a look at Vision’s internal world. He has created a mental space that looks like a mansion, where he meets the human versions of the AIs stored in his system. These include F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and Ultron. Vision consults these personalities as he searches for meaning in his existence.
His quiet life ends when someone places a bounty on his head. He must go on the run with Tommy, and the series follows their escape. The trailer also shows Vision saying, “I was an Avenger, but I’m not a hero anymore”. This line suggests the character is struggling with his role in the world after everything he has been through.
Bettany previously described the show as being about “intergenerational trauma” and “fathers and sons… and denial of pain, and denial of your own truth, and coming to terms with who and what you are, and what you could be”.
