Marvel Studios has officially announced the cast for its upcoming ‘X-Men’ reboot during the D23 fan event in Anaheim, California. The new lineup brings together a mix of rising stars and established actors to play the beloved mutant characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The announcement, made by Marvel president Kevin Feige on August 14, 2026, confirms several casting rumors while also delivering some surprises. The film, directed by Jake Schreier (known for Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’), is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2028.
New Generation of X-Men Assembles for MCU Debut
The cast includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier. Adam Driver joins the project as the villain Mister Sinister.
Sink’s casting as Jean Grey was already known to fans after she appeared in the role in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which released in July 2026. Her character’s introduction in that film set the stage for her return in the X-Men reboot.
Connor, known for his role in ‘Heartstopper,’ will play Scott Summers, the mutant leader who fires powerful optic blasts from his eyes. Weaving takes on the role of Emma Frost, a powerful telepath who can transform her body into diamond form.
Navarrette, who gained attention for her performance in the horror film ‘Obsession,’ steps into the role of Rogue. Rogue is a mutant who can absorb the powers and memories of others through physical touch. Boyd will play Storm, the mutant with power over weather. Abbott, who previously worked with Driver on the series ‘Girls,’ will portray Professor X, the founder and leader of the X-Men.
Feige teased that the upcoming film will be “Jean Grey’s story,” placing Sink’s character at the center of the narrative.
Adam Driver Joins as Mister Sinister in Surprise Casting Choice
One of the biggest surprises of the presentation was Adam Driver‘s casting as Mister Sinister. Driver, who was not present in person at D23, appeared via video message from Pinewood Studios.
“Kevin and I have been talking for years about maybe joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And I think we finally found the perfect film at the perfect time. So I’m very excited to be playing Mag…. Nope. Even better. Nathaniel Milbury. So I’ll be right here, waiting for everybody to show up.”
Driver had been the subject of casting speculation for months, with many fans believing he would play Magneto. Instead, Marvel confirmed he will portray Nathaniel Milbury, the human identity of Mister Sinister, a villain from the X-Men comics known for his obsession with mutant genetics.
Mister Sinister, created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Marc Silvestri, is a geneticist who conducts experiments on mutants. The character has a significant connection to both Cyclops and Jean Grey in the comics, as he believes combining their genetic material could create the ultimate mutant. This marks the character’s first appearance in a live-action feature film.

The ‘X-Men’ reboot is scheduled for release on May 5, 2028. The film will mark Marvel Studios’ first standalone theatrical X-Men movie since Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019, which brought the film rights to the X-Men under Marvel’s control.
The new film will introduce a fresh generation of mutants to the MCU and is expected to become an important part of the franchise’s future storytelling. Feige noted that there is more casting news to come, but he wanted to introduce this first group of actors.
The cast members met each other backstage at D23 for the first time before the presentation. Connor shared his excitement about the project, saying the film will offer a different take on the characters.
“I grew up with the original movies, and it’s really cool because it also feels like we are doing a really different version. [It’s] a different take, which is really exciting.”
Director Schreier also spoke about his approach to the reboot, saying he wants to explore stories from the X-Men universe that have not been shown in previous films.
Several legacy X-Men stars, including Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, are set to return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ creating the possibility that the old and new mutant eras could cross paths.
