HBO recently released the trailer for House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 5, revealing the intense aftermath of the Battle at Rook’s Rest. Following the grim events of Episode 4, where Rhaenyra sent one of her dragons to war and lost a valuable ally, the upcoming episode promises even more drama and conflict.
Consequences of the Battle at Rook’s Rest
The Episode 5 trailer, released on Monday, July 8, teases the fallout from the Battle at Rook’s Rest. During the battle, Aemond and Vhagar killed Rhaenys‘ dragon, Meleys, while Rhaenys herself met a tragic end, brought down by a drunken King Aegon and his dragon Sunfyre. The aftermath shows Meleys’ head paraded through King’s Landing, labeled a “traitor dragon” as Alicent and Aemond look on.

King Aegon suffered nearly fatal injuries during the battle, and the trailer hints at the uncertainty of his survival as Queen Alicent questions his condition. With Aegon incapacitated, Prince Aemond assumes the role of king, creating further tension.
Rhaenyra’s Struggle and Daemon’s Threat
Back in Dragonstone, Rhaenyra seeks to gain the support of the Riverlands as allies in the Dance of the Dragons. The death of Rhaenys and Meleys has pushed the Blacks to consider more drastic measures. Daemon, now presiding over Caraxes, issues dire threats to soldiers, demanding their allegiance or facing destruction.
The trailer reveals internal conflicts, with Daemon dreaming of claiming the crown and Alicent wary of Ser Criston Cole’s true intentions as the newly appointed Hand of the King. The political intrigue deepens as the war rages on.
The White Worm’s Advice and Rising Tensions
Mysaria, known as The White Worm, advises Rhaenyra, reminding her that “there’s more than one way to fight a war,” while praising the late King Viserys I for maintaining peace during his reign. This suggests that the Blacks are ready to retaliate for Rhaenys’ death and the injustices inflicted by the Greens, especially after the killing of Rhaenyra’s son, Prince Lucerys.
The trailer concludes with Ser Criston Cole hinting at impending doom, indicating that both sides of the conflict are bracing for the worst as the war continues to escalate.
Recap of Episode 4: The Red Dragon and the Gold
Episode 4, titled The Red Dragon and the Gold, detailed the tragic deaths of brothers Ser Erryk and Ser Arryk following Ser Criston’s failed assassination attempt on Rhaenyra. The battle at Rook’s Rest, meant to suppress opposition, saw Rhaenys and Meleys falling victim to Aemond and Vhagar’s surprise attack, leading to a significant victory for the Greens.
The next episode of House of the Dragon will air on July 14, 2024.
