The hit Apple TV+ comedy Shrinking is getting a fresh start for its fourth season. Jason Segel, who plays therapist Jimmy Laird and also serves as co-creator and writer, recently shared new details about what fans can expect when the show returns. The actor spoke at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees Studio alongside cast members Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, and Michael Urie.

The show received 10 Emmy nominations for its third season, including a nod for Outstanding Comedy Series. Jason Segel also won the Astra TV Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. During the event, Segel opened up about the creative direction for the upcoming season and why the writers decided to move away from the show’s original grief-heavy storyline.

Season 4 Shifts Focus From Acute Grief

Jason Segel explained that the writers always knew they wanted to move past the acute stage of grief. He said staying in that space for too long would make the show run out of steam. The creative team had many discussions about what the next chapter could look like for Jimmy.

“We knew that we wanted to get out of the acute stage of grief as a show because it will run out of steam eventually. What was interesting to me is what does it look like when you then decide, ‘OK, I’m ready to take it for a spin now. I’ve reached the end of the acute stage. I’m going to walk out this front door and try to have a good day.’ Sounds great, but it turns out it’s its own set of clumsiness and hilarity.”

Segel compared the new season to a romantic comedy. He said trying to date again at 45 years old brings its own funny and awkward moments. The actor believes there is a lot of fun to explore in that space.

A New Story With the Same Cast

Bill Lawrence, who co-created the show with Segel and Brett Goldstein, previously teased that Season 4 would feature “a new story with the same cast”. The show was originally planned as a three-season arc focusing on grief, forgiveness, and moving forward. But Apple TV gave the show an early renewal for Season 4 back in January 2026, just one day before the Season 3 premiere.

Lawrence explained that the writers have told the story of whether Jimmy would make it through his wife’s death and find happiness again. Now it is time for something different. He said if Season 4 started with Jimmy still being super sad about his wife, viewers would wonder what the show was doing.

“We always pitched a three season story on #Shrinking grief-forgiveness-moving forward. We wanted to stay true to that and end the way we planned. (So excited to do Season 4 and a new story with the same cast.)”

Filming Already Underway

Production for Season 4 has already started. Jason Segel confirmed at the Newport Beach TV Festival in June 2026 that filming began about a week and a half to two weeks prior. This matched the timeline that Harrison Ford had previously shared.

The show wrapped its third season in April 2026. Since Shrinking does not require heavy post-production work, the new season could arrive earlier than expected. Industry reports suggest a release window in early 2027 is likely. Apple TV has not announced an official premiere date yet.

Harrison Ford and the Full Cast Return

Harrison Ford will return as Dr. Paul Rhoades in Season 4. The veteran actor has called his work on Shrinking “one of the most pleasurable experiences of my life”. Ford spoke about the deep connection between his character and Jimmy. He said there is something special about their relationship that goes beyond the surface.

“I think the relationship is complicated. I think there’s the surface relationship which is pretty clear, but then there’s something else between these two guys, and I think it’s each of them finding themselves through their relationship with each other.”

The full main cast will return for Season 4. This includes Jessica Williams as Gaby, Luke Tennie as Sean, Christa Miller as Liz, Michael Urie as Brian, Lukita Maxwell as Alice, and Ted McGinley as Derek.

Karen Gillan Joins the Cast

Karen Gillan, best known for playing Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, has joined the Season 4 cast in a recurring role. She will appear alongside the regular cast members. Gillan is also known for her work in the Jumanji reboot films and the long-running series Doctor Who.

Season 3 Finale Set Up the New Direction

The Season 3 finale, titled “And That’s Our Time,” set the stage for the big changes coming in Season 4. Jimmy started moving forward by pursuing a relationship with Sofi, played by Cobie Smulders. His daughter Alice headed to college in Connecticut, and Paul also relocated there with his wife.

Bill Lawrence hinted that there could be a significant time jump when the show returns. He said the time jump would be beyond a year or two, which would be a big change from previous seasons that only jumped a couple of months at a time. This time jump will allow the characters to be in completely different places in their lives.

Lawrence also noted that the writers left Easter eggs throughout Season 3 that hint at what is coming. He said some storylines from the third year were left unresolved on purpose.

“I think people will feel when they come back to this show, that it’s a completely different story. And the reason we agreed to do it was that we feel that the cast and characters of this show have enough stuff going on in their life that we are interested in seeing what a new story for these characters looks like.”
