Karen Gillan is joining the Apple TV+ comedy-drama Shrinking for its fourth season. The Guardians of the Galaxy star will appear in a recurring role alongside returning cast members Harrison Ford, Jason Segel, and Jessica Williams. Production on the new season began in May 2026, with the show expected to return in early 2027.
The casting marks a reunion between Gillan and Ford, who previously worked together on the 2020 film The Call of the Wild. It also brings another Marvel Cinematic Universe actor to the series, following Fordโs recent entry into the MCU as Thaddeus Ross.
Karen Gillanโs Role Details Remain Under Wraps
Apple TV+ has not shared any information about Gillanโs character. The Scottish actress is best known for playing Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers movies. She also starred as Ruby Roundhouse in the Jumanji reboot films, with a third movie, Jumanji: Open World, scheduled for release in December 2026.
Gillan started her career on the British series Doctor Who, where she played Amy Pond from 2010 to 2013. She also led the ABC sitcom Selfie in 2014 and appeared in the 2024 miniseries Douglas Is Cancelled.
Harrison Ford confirmed in mid-May that Shrinking season 4 started filming the following week. The cast has 12 episodes to shoot, which is longer than previous seasons.
Season 4 Brings a Time Jump and Fresh Direction
Bill Lawrence, who created the show with Jason Segel and Brett Goldstein, said season 4 will begin a โcompletely new storyโ. The writers planned Shrinking as a three-season story about grief, forgiveness, and moving forward. Season 3 ended that arc in April 2026.
Now the team is doing something different. Lawrence posted on X (formerly Twitter) in April: โExcited to start a completely new story next year. Feels scary/risky/funโ. He later clarified that the same characters will return, but their situations will change.
โYou guys can read about this if you wish. We always pitched a three-season story on #Shrinking grief-forgiveness-moving forward. We wanted to stay true to that and end the way we planned,โ Lawrence wrote. โSo excited to do Season 4 and a new story with the same cast.โ
The new season will include a time jump of a couple of years. Jimmy (Segel) and Gaby (Williams) will still be in California. Dr. Paul Rhoades (Ford) will continue dealing with his Parkinsonโs disease. Alice (Lukita Maxwell) will be in college on the East Coast.
Harrison Ford Confirms Return After Season 3 Finale
Some fans worried that Ford might leave the show after season 3. His character, Paul, parted ways with Jimmy in the finale. But Lawrence quickly put those fears to rest.
โI would be insane not to find a way for Harrison Ford to be in the show in perpetuity. He is not disappearing,โ Lawrence told Deadline in April. โWeโre gonna jump ahead a couple years and see where everybodyโs at, and we have a new story to tell. He will be part of it.โ
Ford, now 83 years old, has called working on Shrinking โone of the most pleasurable experiencesโ of his career. The actor plays a veteran therapist who mentors Jimmy while managing his own health issues.
Full Cast Returning for Season 4
Alongside Ford and Segel, the returning main cast includes Jessica Williams as Gaby, Christa Miller as Liz, Luke Tennie as Sean, Michael Urie as Brian, Lukita Maxwell as Alice, and Ted McGinley as Derek.
Michael J. Fox, who appeared in season 2, has said he would return to the show โin a heartbeatโ if asked. There is no confirmation yet about his involvement in season 4.
Gillan recently worked with Segel on the dark comedy thriller Over Your Dead Body, which she produced and he starred in. That connection may have led to her casting on the Apple TV+ series.

Shrinking Season 4 Release Window
Shrinking season 4 does not have an official release date yet. Based on the production schedule that began in May 2026, the season is expected to arrive in early 2027. The show will stream exclusively on Apple TV+ for viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and other regions where the service is available.
Lawrence has also shared that the team is not treating season 4 as the final chapter. โWe arenโt going into this next season feeling like itโs the last one. There will always be material,โ he said. He confirmed that the writers are already planning arcs for potential seasons 5 and 6.
The series has maintained strong ratings throughout its run, with a 93% average approval score on Rotten Tomatoes.
