IU is making a surprise return with new music. The singer dropped a teaser video on September 4, announcing a digital single that will arrive on September 10 at 6 PM KST. The announcement comes as a gift to fans while she takes a break from concerts and album promotions due to health issues.
The teaser, posted on IU’s official social media channels at midnight, features a retro computer screen design. A symbol combining a crescent moon, an orbit, and a glowing sphere appears alongside the words “IU DIGITAL SINGLE” and the release date “2026.09.10. 18:00 (KST)”. At the end of the video, the phrase “Destination: UNKNOWN PLANET” flashes on screen, hinting at the theme of the upcoming track.
The Music Already Sounds Familiar to Fans
The background music in the teaser is the same snippet that appeared in a video titled “Star, Please Grant My Wish,” which IU uploaded to her official YouTube channel in late August. At that time, fans already started guessing that the music might be connected to a new song. Now those guesses have been confirmed.
A Special Anniversary Release
This new single holds extra meaning because it comes exactly one year after IU’s previous surprise digital single “Bye, Summer,” which dropped on September 10, 2025. She released that track without any prior notice, and now she is repeating the pattern on the same date. The song title and other details remain unknown for now. Her agency, EDAM Entertainment, said they will share more content gradually before the release.
Health Issues Paused Her Concert and Album Plans
The new single arrives while IU is dealing with worsening symptoms of patulous Eustachian tube, a condition affecting the ear. In July, she had to postpone her planned September concert at Goyang Stadium and push back the release of her sixth studio album.
Her agency explained at the time that both IU and the company agreed her ear condition made it difficult to perform. They stated, “Prioritizing her health, after careful discussion, we decided to adjust the schedule for the Goyang Stadium concert in September, subsequent performances, and the regular 6th album”.
IU also spoke directly to fans through the fan platform Berries. She said:
“I didn’t want to worry my fans, but I’m sorry to share this news in advance. Recently, my chronic patulous Eustachian tube symptoms have worsened. Lately, the symptoms have persisted day and night, and I’ve repeatedly struggled to find my condition when singing.”
She added that experts advised against concerts, which require heavy movement and sweating, unlike studio recordings. Since her album promotion was planned around concerts and tours, the release date had to be adjusted as well.
IU promised fans: “I will do my best to minimize the wait and deliver the new album and performances to you as soon as possible”.
