Yash’s big-budget gangster drama ‘Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups’ opened to massive numbers but crashed quickly due to poor word-of-mouth. Here is what went wrong.
Yash’s return to the big screen after the blockbuster success of KGF: Chapter 2 was one of the most awaited movie events of 2026. The film, directed by Geetu Mohandas, arrived in theatres on August 26 with huge expectations. Made on a reported budget of Rs 500 crore, the movie was expected to shatter records. But within days of its release, the hype faded. The film saw a sharp drop in collections and is now being called a major box office disappointment.
A Record Opening That Could Not Be Sustained
Toxic started its theatrical run with a bang. On day one, the film collected Rs 101.10 crore net in India, crossing Rs 140 crore worldwide. Trade analysts expected the film to maintain this momentum. But the numbers told a different story.
On day two, the collection dropped by 64 percent, earning only Rs 37.65 crore. The decline continued throughout the first week. By day eight, the film was earning less than Rs 4 crore daily. On day 14, the collection fell to just Rs 69 lakh. The movie managed only Rs 12.84 crore between days 10 and 14, a sharp contrast to its Rs 239.30 crore first-week total.
Negative Word-of-Mouth and Mixed Reviews
The primary reason for the film’s failure was poor audience response. Toxic received largely negative reviews from both critics and viewers. The film’s storyline, characters, and pacing became major points of criticism.
The audience reaction was so negative that the film’s BookMyShow rating disappeared shortly after release, raising questions about whether the makers tried to hide poor feedback.
A source close to the production told Bollywood Hungama:
“The Toxic team had an offer of Rs 150 crores from a leading platform, but the demand from the team was a lot higher, north of Rs 200 crores. Yash was confident that the film would do blockbuster business in theatres.”
That confidence did not pay off.
Budget vs Box Office: A Costly Mismatch
Toxic was made on a reported budget of Rs 500 crore. Some reports even suggested the budget could be as high as Rs 1,000 crore.
As of day 15, the film’s India net collection stood at Rs 247.44 crore. The worldwide gross reached Rs 338.32 crore. While these numbers look impressive on paper, they fall far short of recovering the massive production cost.
Industry estimates suggest the makers could face losses of around Rs 300 crore. The film opened at around Rs 120 crore in India but is expected to finish its theatrical run below Rs 250 crore.
OTT Deal Takes a Major Hit
The box office failure has also affected the film’s digital rights. Before release, makers reportedly received an offer of Rs 150 crore from a leading streaming platform. They rejected it, hoping for a deal worth more than Rs 200 crore.
But after the theatrical disappointment, streaming platforms lowered their offers drastically. The highest offer now is reportedly just Rs 30 crore, with ZEE5 making the biggest bid.
The makers are now considering a new edit specifically for the OTT release, hoping to improve the film’s digital value.
A source added:
“The makers are now contemplating a completely new edit for the digital version, with the hope of fetching a bigger amount than what’s on the table. The discussions are underway to figure out a way to reduce the losses.”
Star Power Could Not Save the Day
Toxic featured a strong cast including Yash, Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Tara Sutaria, Huma Qureshi, and Rukmini Vasanth. Despite the star power, the film could not sustain audience interest.
The film’s adult-oriented storyline also created issues for satellite television rights, which are expected to generate very low revenue.

As of day 15 (September 9, 2026), Toxic is running across just 737 shows. The film collected Rs 0.21 crore on day 15. The total India net collection stands at Rs 247.44 crore. The domestic gross has reached Rs 295.32 crore, while the worldwide gross is Rs 338.32 crore.
The film’s theatre occupancy on day 14 was 18.7 percent nationwide. The Kannada version earned Rs 47 lakh with an occupancy of 16.52 percent, while the Hindi version brought in Rs 22 lakh with a stronger occupancy of 29.60 percent.
Toxic has surpassed Jana Nayagan to become the fourth highest-grossing Indian film of 2026 globally. But given its enormous budget, this achievement offers little comfort to the makers.
