Street Fighter won the weekend box office, but the victory comes with a clear caveat. The Paramount and Legendary adaptation of the Capcom fighting game earned $31 million domestically and $51.1 million worldwide in its opening frame, according to studio estimates. Resident Evil, the other Capcom game adaptation released earlier this fall, opened to $60 million domestically and $108.3 million globally. The gap between the two debuts is wide, and it places Street Fighter at roughly half of what Resident Evil pulled in its first three days.
Street Fighter’s Opening Weekend Numbers
Street Fighter hit 3,575 North American theaters on Friday, October 16, 2026, and brought in $13 million on its first day, including $4 million from Thursday previews. The weekend total landed at $31 million domestic. International markets added $20.1 million, pushing the global opening to $51.1 million.
The film carries an $82 million production budget, split between Legendary Pictures and Capcom. It is the first release under the new distribution deal between Paramount and Legendary.
Audience response is mixed but not hostile. CinemaScore gave the film a B-, the same grade earned by the 1994 Street Fighter film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics sit around 41 to 45 percent, while the audience score is much higher at 80 to 82 percent. IGN gave the film a 6 out of 10.
“Jumbled tonal mess” and “only sporadically entertaining” — The Hollywood Reporter critic Frank Scheck on Street Fighter.
Resident Evil’s Record-Breaking Debut
Resident Evil arrived in theaters on September 19, 2026, and opened to $60 million domestically from 3,684 theaters. International markets added $48.3 million, bringing the worldwide opening to $108.3 million. That was the biggest opening weekend in the franchise’s history, ahead of earlier projections that had the film pegged at $40 million to $50 million domestic and around $80 million worldwide.
CinemaScore audiences gave Resident Evil a B+. The film is directed by Zach Cregger, known for Barbarian and Weapons. It took a different creative route from Street Fighter: instead of leaning on familiar game characters, Resident Evil used the themes of the games to tell an original story.
That approach paid off. By October 18, Resident Evil had reached $361.1 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise. Domestic gross sits at $148.4 million, with international at $212.7 million.
The Gap Between the Two Openings
The comparison is not close. Street Fighter grossed about half of what Resident Evil did in its first weekend. The two films also sit in different positions on the release calendar. Resident Evil had a full month to build momentum before Street Fighter arrived, and it is still charting in the top 10. Street Fighter is just starting its run.
There are signs that Street Fighter may be front-loaded. A B- CinemaScore often points to a fan-driven opening rather than broad word-of-mouth support. The film drew heavily from the core Street Fighter audience, and the gap between critic and audience scores suggests it is playing well with that group but not reaching much beyond it.

Street Fighter did beat several other 2026 video game movies in its opening frame, but it trails Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat II, another fighting game adaptation released earlier this year.
Cast and Production Details
Street Fighter stars Andrew Koji and Noah Centineo, with Callina Liang and Jason Momoa also in the cast. The film is directed by Kitao Sakurai. The PG-13 adaptation leans into the characters and over-the-top tone of the games, a choice that has pleased fans even as critics remain unimpressed.
Resident Evil stars Austin Abrams, who also appears in the survival thriller Whalefall, released the same weekend as Street Fighter. Whalefall opened to $7.3 million domestic and $17 million worldwide against a reported $60 million net budget.

Where the Two Films Sit in the Video Game Movie Race
Resident Evil is the clear winner of the fall video game movie matchup. Its $361.1 million worldwide total makes it the biggest film in the franchise and one of the strongest video game adaptations of the year. Street Fighter is No. 1 for its opening weekend, but its $51.1 million global start puts it behind Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat II in the same genre space.
Both films remain in theaters. Street Fighter will face new competition from Warner Bros. and DC’s Clayface in its second weekend, while Resident Evil continues to hold screens about a month after release. Final weekend numbers for Street Fighter are expected on Monday, October 19.
