DC has made its biggest Wonder Woman announcement in years, and it has nothing to do with a movie. The publisher has officially declared 2027 the “Year of Wonder” , a twelve-month celebration of Diana of Themyscira that will reshape her main comic series, bring in two acclaimed writers, and place the Amazon Princess at the center of the DC Universe in a way she has not been for decades. The news arrived on October 20, 2026, the 85th anniversary of Wonder Woman’s first appearance in All-Star Comics #8 in 1941. DC Studios co-chief James Gunn marked the day on social media, but he did not announce a live-action Wonder Woman project, leaving the 2027 plans firmly on the page for now.

What the Year of Wonder Actually Is

Year of Wonder is a publishing initiative, not a film slate. DC is dedicating 2027 to Wonder Woman across its comic line, with rotating creative teams taking over the main Wonder Woman series and additional stories promised throughout the year. The celebration begins on January 20, 2027, with Wonder Woman #41, a 32-page issue priced at $4.99 in comic shops and digital retailers.

The publisher has described the year as an “unforgettable year of stories from celebrated comic book creators”. The main series will pass through two distinct arcs between January and October 2027, each with a different writer and artist, before DC reveals what comes next.

Louise Simonson Takes Over Wonder Woman #41

Louise Simonson, a legendary figure in comics known for X-Factor, Power Pack, and The Death of Superman, will write the main Wonder Woman series for the first time in her career. She is joined by artist Cian Tormey for a four-issue story that runs from Wonder Woman #41 through #44.

The story puts Diana on a political and personal mission: she is determined to abolish the Amazon Safety Act and clear the path for her sisters to return to Man’s World. The act has kept the Amazons isolated, and the arc asks a difficult question: after everything the Amazons have endured, do they even want to return to a humanity that has repeatedly failed them.

Simonson’s arc also brings in unexpected allies. Lois Lane plays a key role, and the story features Granny Goodness and her Female Furies as major players.

“I haven’t written many books with female leads, and they don’t come any more iconic than Diana. Teaming her up with Lois Lane, another iconic character, is a dream come true. Throw in Granny Goodness and her Female Furies? It doesn’t get more fun than that.” — Louise Simonson

Simonson also spoke about the pressure of following Tom King‘s run and preceding Stephanie Williams‘ arc.

“Writing Wonder Woman, not just as part of the main series but during DC’s Year of Wonder, is both intimidating and exciting. Intimidating because my four-issue arc is sandwiched between the brilliant Tom King run and the work of the immensely talented, smart, and funny Stephanie Williams.” — Louise Simonson

Stephanie Williams and Elena Casagrande Carry the Year Forward

After Simonson and Tormey’s four issues, Stephanie Williams and artist Elena Casagrande take over for a six-issue arc running from Wonder Woman #45 through #50, ending in October 2027. Williams is an Eisner Award-nominated writer who previously contributed four issues to DC’s Wonder Woman series in 2026 and co-wrote Wonder Woman 2026 Annual: Wonder War – The Matriarch Special #1.

Her arc will feature a team-up between Diana and Queen Nubia, a pairing Williams has wanted to write for a long time. The story will give Diana room to be “fierce and funny and compassionate all at once,” according to Williams.

“Diana has my whole heart, so getting to come back to her world after Wonder Woman and Matriarch feels like coming home, only this time with a longer runway. Six issues gives me room to really sit with Diana, to let her be fierce and funny and compassionate all at once.” — Stephanie Williams

What Happened Before: Tom King’s Run and the Amazon Safety Act

The Year of Wonder follows the end of Tom King and Daniel Sampere‘s Wonder Woman run, which concluded in December 2026 after a polarizing stretch for the character. King’s run introduced the Amazon Safety Act, the law that Simonson’s arc will directly challenge. The act restricted the Amazons’ movement and kept Diana’s sisters separated from the world of men, and it became one of the defining political conflicts of the series.

King’s run also drew debate among readers, and DC’s decision to rotate writers through 2027 rather than lock in a single long-term creative team suggests the publisher is using the year to reset and explore different directions for Diana.

Free Comics, a Statue, and More Stories to Come

Year of Wonder extends beyond the main series. DC is offering a free-to-read selection of Wonder Woman comics on DC Universe Infinite, including a curated “Get to Know! Wonder Woman” collection featuring six essential stories from across Diana’s history. The collection includes work by Tom King, Daniel Sampere, Greg Rucka, Nicola Scott, and Phil Jimenez.

DC is also placing a bronze Wonder Woman statue at 3400 Warner Boulevard to mark 85 years of the character’s history. More Wonder Woman stories and creative teams will be revealed as the year unfolds, according to the publisher.

The Live-Action Question: What DC Has Not Confirmed

The Year of Wonder announcement is a comics story, but it landed during a period of intense speculation about Wonder Woman’s live-action future. Adria Arjona has been repeatedly linked to the role in fan chatter, and a viral social media post from Man of Tomorrow actor Frank Grillo showed a fan-made image of Arjona as Wonder Woman. Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to James Gunn’s Superman, is scheduled for July 9, 2027, and some fans have theorized that Diana will debut there.

Gunn has addressed the rumors directly. Asked on Threads whether Wonder Woman casting would be announced in January 2026, he replied with a single word: “Nope”. He has also said there is no news about Wonder Woman casting, and he has dismissed the idea that Wonder Woman or Batman will appear in Man of Tomorrow. DC Studios has not officially announced Arjona as Wonder Woman, and a separate casting rumor pointed to Maxima, not Diana, as the female role being sought for the film.

The confirmed 2027 Wonder Woman plan is the Year of Wonder publishing line. A live-action solo film or a DCU debut has not been dated or cast by DC Studios.
