100 Days of Deception episode 5 aired on tvN on Saturday, October 24, 2026, and it pushed Kim You-jung‘s Lee Ga-kyung past her breaking point. The episode followed the fallout of the Gugukdan’s failed assassination attempt, put Ga-kyung in an interrogation room with a man she recognized, and ended with her walking out on the independence movement while Lee Moo-saeng‘s Yoo Philip followed her with a hidden pistol.
Ratings dipped to an average of 6.5% nationwide and 7.0% in the Seoul metropolitan area, with a nationwide peak of 8.8%, according to Nielsen Korea paid platform data cited by OSEN and ChosunBiz. The episode still ranked first in its time slot across cable and general programming channels.
What Happened Before Episode 5
Episode 4 closed with two disasters happening at once. The Gugukdan launched a second attempt to kill Sato Shinichi, played by Jin Sun-kyu, and the operation fell straight into his trap. Han Cheol-ryong (Kim In-kwon) and Jang Jeong-yeop (Lee Do-gun) died during the raid. Yoo So-ran (Kim Hyun-joo) was wounded but escaped Fukuda‘s men, and Young-bok covered for her before collapsing from a gunshot wound. Myung-nam stayed at his side.
Ga-kyung spent that same night on a secret phone call to Philip. When she turned around, Sato Hideo, played by Park Jinyoung, was standing outside the door.
The Photo Studio and a Memory of Family
Episode 5 opened with Hideo waiting outside to take Ga-kyung to a photography studio. The trip was for a new identification picture for the Government-General, but it turned into something closer to a date. When the camera flash went off, Ga-kyung saw a memory of her parents flash through her mind.
Hideo climbed under the black focusing cloth and got flustered looking at her. Ga-kyung spotted her friend No-ma in the shop and needed somewhere to hide, so she ducked under the cloth with Hideo. Their faces ended up inches apart, and he was the one who could not keep still.
The moment soured fast. Hideo assumed No-ma was an old lover and accused Ga-kyung of cheating on him. Ga-kyung stormed out without taking her photo.
The Failed Ambush and Its Cost
While Ga-kyung was taking pictures, the rest of the Gugukdan was dealing with the dead. Han Cheol-ryong left a suicide note that became the most quoted line of the episode.
“If my death can bring independence to my homeland even a minute or second earlier, I will be satisfied.” — Han Cheol-ryong’s suicide note
So-ran nearly got caught when the police chief arrived at the Joil Textile building. Myung-nam covered for her by pretending to be undressed, and the police left without finding her. Young-bok was not as lucky. He lost consciousness after the Japanese police cleared the building.
Hideo’s New Bond With Kkot-nim
Hideo ran into Kkot-nim on the street while she was waiting for No-ma and carrying constipation medicine. He carried her home, made her food, and promised to teach her how to read and write. Kkot-nim talked about her “unnie” the whole way, meaning Ga-kyung. Hideo has no idea the girl is the younger sister of the woman he is chasing.
The scenes gave the episode its only lightness. TheReviewGeek described the contrast directly, noting the child scenes “provide a nice contrast to the grim situation surrounding Gugukdan and the Japanese.”
The Interrogation That Broke Ga-kyung
The Governor-General arrived in Keijo and made clear he was unhappy with Sato’s handling of the unrest. Sato ordered Fukuda to hunt down every Gugukdan member. Fukuda then pulled Ga-kyung out of the building as his interpreter for a prisoner at Jongno Police Station.
The prisoner was Geum Seok-jung (Kam Woo-sung), the cake delivery man who had appeared at Philip’s house in episode 2. He is also So-ran’s husband. Fukuda tortured him while Ga-kyung translated every word, and her halting delivery made the room worse. Fukuda leaned on her with a line designed to crush her spirit.
“Dying miserably alone—that is the independence movement of the Korean people.” — Fukuda
Seok-jung stayed silent until Fukuda called Ga-kyung “Geum Seo-hee.” The name belonged to Seok-jung’s lost daughter, and he thrashed against his restraints the moment he heard it. Ga-kyung recognized him at the same time. She had helped catch this man in episode 2.
Hideo Steps In and Takes a Slap
Hideo entered the interrogation room and saw Ga-kyung shaking in the corner. He questioned Fukuda’s methods, and Fukuda slapped him, telling him he was not even Sato’s real son. Sato Shinichi was standing behind the door and heard everything. He walked in, slapped Fukuda, and reminded him how important Philip and the Western press are to Japan’s political goals.
Outside, Hideo apologized to Ga-kyung.
“I’m sorry. This won’t happen again.” — Sato Hideo
He then asked her to keep the day’s events from Philip so the Japanese would not end up in foreign newspapers. Ga-kyung answered with a line that closed the door on the partnership.
“Thank you for reminding me how I became an interpreter for the Government-General.” — Lee Ga-kyung
Why Ga-kyung Wants Out
Ga-kyung walked home in the rain. She threw away the clothes she wore as Geum Seo-hui, changed back into a plain hanbok, and packed her few belongings. So-ran tried to stop her, and Ga-kyung let out everything she had held in. She said that if her cover broke, she could die the same miserable death Fukuda described.
Ga-kyung then told them the prisoner was Geum Seok-jung. So-ran’s eyes started trembling, and Ga-kyung understood the rest. Seo-hee was So-ran’s daughter, and the family lost her 13 years earlier.
“You’re all crazy!” — Lee Ga-kyung
She ran into the street, tripped over a stone, and broke down while picking her scattered things out of the rain.
The Gun Behind Her Back
Philip followed Ga-kyung into the street with a pistol hidden behind him, ready to kill her before she could expose the Gugukdan. So-ran watched from the second-floor window. Ready Steady Cut called the moment a reminder of what the cause costs the people fighting for it, writing that Ga-kyung is “now a liability.”
Character Story Progression
- Lee Ga-kyung started the episode teasing Hideo at a photo studio and ended it as a fugitive from the people she was helping. She saw a man tortured for her cover name and chose her own life over the mission.
- Sato Hideo moved from jealous suitor to protector. He pulled Ga-kyung out of the interrogation room, apologized, and gained a new tie to her family through Kkot-nim.
- Yoo So-ran lost two comrades, nearly got caught, and learned her husband was in Japanese custody. She also realized Ga-kyung now knows the truth about her daughter.
- Yoo Philip dropped his journalist calm. He followed Ga-kyung with a gun to protect the group’s secrets.
- Fukuda used the interrogation to break Ga-kyung rather than to get information, and he paid for it with a slap from Sato.
- Sato Shinichi heard his subordinate insult his adopted son and stepped in. The Governor-General’s visit left him under pressure to restore order.
- Kkot-nim gained a teacher and a protector in Hideo without knowing who he really is.
- No-ma was taken in by police, who ruled he did not match the age of the cake delivery suspect, and later came home crying.
- Young-bok collapsed from his gunshot wound, and Myung-nam stayed to watch over him.
