Star Wars fans have a new reason to visit their local bookstore next week. The Art of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, a 256-page hardcover from Abrams Books, is set for release on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The official behind-the-scenes companion takes readers inside the making of the May 2026 film that brought Din Djarin and Grogu from Disney+ to theaters.

What the Book Contains

Phil Szostak, a Lucasfilm creative art manager who has worked with the company’s art departments since 2008, wrote the book. Doug Chiang, Lucasfilm’s senior vice president and executive design director, wrote the foreword. The pages hold previously unseen concept art, early sketches, and interviews with the film’s cast, crew, and creative team. The visual development of characters, locations, and vehicles receives dedicated attention throughout the book.

The book continues Abrams’ long-running series of Star Wars art publications. Szostak previously authored companion books for the first two seasons of The Mandalorian television series, as well as The Rise of Skywalker and Andor.

The Film Behind the Book

The Mandalorian and Grogu arrived in theaters in May 2026, marking the franchise’s first theatrical release since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Jon Favreau directed the film and co-wrote it with Dave Filoni. Pedro Pascal returned as Din Djarin, with Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White joining the cast. White voices Rotta the Hutt, the son of Jabba the Hutt.

A Look at the Creative Team

Szostak graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York and ran the JAK Films Art Department on Skywalker Ranch for more than three years before joining the narrative design team on LucasArts’ Star Wars: 1313. His art books have become a staple of the franchise’s publishing line.

Chiang’s foreword adds perspective from a designer who has worked on the franchise since the prequel trilogy and helped shape the visual style of The Mandalorian.

The book’s 256 pages cover the full visual arc of the film, from early sketches to finished designs. Concept art spreads shared by Variety ahead of release show the level of detail readers can expect.
