The new Korean drama As You Stood By on Netflix starts with a powerful and difficult story. The first episode, which came out on November 7, 2025, introduces viewers to a woman who has spent her life watching the people she loves get hurt. After a final, shocking event, she decides that the only way to save her best friend is to make a dangerous and extreme choice.
The series focuses on Jo Eun-su, a determined saleswoman, and her childhood friend Jo Hui-su. Through their story, the show looks at the deep impact of domestic violence and the feeling of being powerless to stop it. The first episode builds a strong foundation for a thriller about what happens when people feel they have no other options.
Understanding the Main Characters
The story centers on two women whose lives are shaped by abuse.
Jo Eun-su works at a luxury department store, where she is shown to be strong and persistent. In the opening episode, she bravely tracks down a mysterious customer, Jin So-baek, after he walks out with a diamond watch without paying. She doesn’t give up until the situation is resolved, showing her tough nature. However, this toughness comes from a painful childhood. Flashbacks show she grew up with a father who abused her mother. Eun-su learned to hide with her younger brother to shield him from the truth, and she carries the trauma of her mother’s suicide attempt.
Jo Hui-su is Eun-su’s best friend and a former successful children’s book author. On the surface, she seems to have a perfect life with her handsome husband, Noh Jin-pyo. Behind closed doors, however, she is a victim of severe physical abuse from him. She has become isolated and desperate, trying to hide her situation from the world, including Eun-su.
The Triggering Events of the First Episode
Several key moments in Episode 1 push Eun-su to her breaking point.
Eun-su’s work at the VIP section of the store brings her into contact with another abused woman, Mrs. Kang. While helping her in a dressing room, Eun-su is horrified to see the brutal bruises covering Mrs. Kang’s back. Mrs. Kang quietly pleads for help, telling Eun-su, “I thought you’d be different.” Despite her shock, Eun-su, frozen by her own past, says nothing. Later, Mrs. Kang’s abusive husband spends a large amount of money at the store as a reward for Eun-su’s silence.
A visit to her parents’ home for her mother’s birthday confirms that her father is still abusing her mother. Eun-su confronts her father, but he dismisses her and claims the police do not care about domestic matters. When she tries to report him, she finds this is sadly true, as the police do not take her report seriously.
Eun-su becomes worried about Hui-su, who has been acting strangely. She eventually discovers the brutal truth when she sees the severe bruises on her best friend’s face. The final straw comes when Eun-su sees a news report that Mrs. Kang has killed herself by jumping in front of her husband’s car. This event, combined with being unable to reach Hui-su, sends Eun-su into a panic.
After hearing the news, So-baek comments that poor Mrs. Kang should have killed her worthless husband instead of herself.
Eun-su rushes to Hui-su’s apartment and arrives just in time to find her on the balcony ledge, ready to jump. Hui-su, in despair, explains she would rather die by her own hand than be killed by her husband. After pulling her friend to safety, a furious and determined Eun-su makes a shocking declaration.
“Let’s kill him,” Eun-su tells Hui-su, setting the stage for their dangerous plan.
