The story of Will Byers’s disappearance is the heart of the first season of Stranger Things. For seven episodes, his friends, family, and the town’s police chief search for him, leading to a terrifying discovery: Will is trapped in a parallel dimension called the Upside Down . His mother, Joyce Byers, immediately knows something is wrong. Despite the police initially treating it as a simple runaway case, Joyce insists her son is in danger . She soon begins experiencing strange phenomena in her home—flickering lights, phones ringing on their own, and a voice in the static . Convinced Will is trying to communicate, she paints an alphabet on her wall and strings up Christmas lights, allowing Will to spell out messages from the other side . One message is simply “RIGHT HERE,” and another, more urgent one: “RUN”.
Meanwhile, Will’s friends—Mike, Dustin, and Lucas—begin their own investigation. In the woods, instead of finding Will, they discover a mysterious girl with a shaved head and a tattoo reading “011” on her wrist . This is Eleven, a child with powerful psychokinetic abilities who has escaped from Hawkins Lab . She becomes crucial to the search, using her powers to help the boys and confirm that Will is still alive somewhere .
Chief Jim Hopper, initially skeptical, grows suspicious of the official story. His investigation leads him to Hawkins Lab, where he breaks in and discovers a massive, growing portal to a dark, alternate dimension . The pieces come together: the monster, a creature the kids nickname the Demogorgon, comes from this dimension, and it has taken Will there .
The Plan to Find Will
By the season’s penultimate episode, the separate groups—Joyce and Hopper, the kids with Eleven, and teenagers Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers—unite with a common goal . They learn that Eleven can locate people using a sensory deprivation tank, which she calls “the bath” . The group builds a makeshift tank at the local middle school so Eleven can search the alternate dimension .
In a tense sequence, Eleven finds Will. She sees him hiding in a familiar place: the Upside Down version of Castle Byers, a small fort he built with his brother in the woods . She also discovers the fate of Nancy’s friend, Barb, who was taken earlier in the season, confirming she did not survive . With Will’s location identified, Joyce and Hopper make a deal with the sinister Dr. Brenner from Hawkins Lab. In exchange for telling Brenner where Eleven is, they are allowed to enter the Upside Down through the main gate at the lab to retrieve Will .
Simultaneously, Nancy and Jonathan, joined by Steve Harrington, prepare to fight and kill the Demogorgon. They lure it to the Byers home, using their own blood as bait, hoping to destroy it and make the rescue safer .
The Rescue in “Chapter Eight: The Upside Down”
The rescue mission unfolds in the season finale. Joyce and Hopper, wearing protective suits, enter the sprawling gate at Hawkins Lab and step into the Upside Down . This dimension is a dark, decaying copy of Hawkins, covered in sticky vines and floating spores . They navigate the eerie landscape to find Castle Byers, but Will is not there. The Demogorgon has found him first and taken him to its lair, which is located in the Upside Down’s version of the Hawkins Public Library .
There, they find Will unconscious. He is suspended in the air, wrapped in vines, with a long, tube-like tendril down his throat . Hopper cuts him free, pulls the organism from his mouth, and desperately performs CPR. The scene is charged with emotion, fueled by Hopper’s own guilt over the death of his young daughter years earlier; he is determined not to let another parent lose a child . Will coughs, gasps, and begins to breathe. Joyce and Hopper carry him back through the gate to the real world .
The rescue is a success, but the danger is not over. At the school, the Demogorgon attacks Mike, Dustin, and Lucas. To save them, a weakened Eleven uses the last of her power to confront the creature. In a self-sacrificial act, she pins the Demogorgon to the wall and disintegrates it, seemingly vanishing herself in the process .

Will is rushed to the hospital, where he is finally reunited with his family and friends . The final episode jumps ahead to Christmas, about a month later. Life in Hawkins appears to have returned to normal. Will is home celebrating with his family, and the boys are playing Dungeons & Dragons again . However, two scenes make it clear that the story is far from over and that Will’s ordeal has left a permanent mark.
First, Chief Hopper is seen being picked up by a black government vehicle, suggesting his deal with Dr. Brenner has ongoing consequences . More ominously, in the final moments, Will excuses himself from the Christmas dinner table and goes to the bathroom. He coughs violently into the sink and sees a small, slug-like creature slither down the drain . When he looks up at the mirror, he has a brief but terrifying flash of the Upside Down, seeing its rotten version of his home superimposed over his reflection . This haunting moment sets the stage for the events of Season 2, where Will continues to struggle with a connection to the dark dimension .
The episode “Chapter Eight: The Upside Down” successfully concludes the central mystery of Season 1 while planting seeds for the future. Will Byers is rescued, but his journey—and the battle with the forces of the Upside Down—is only just beginning.
