The latest episode of Mayor of Kingstown delivered one of the series’ most shocking moments. The question on everyone’s mind after Season 4, Episode 7 is about the fate of Sergeant Robert Sawyer, a character whose violent path has been building for years. The episode presented a dark and ambiguous scene that has left viewers debating what really happened.

Robert’s Downward Spiral and a Final Confrontation

For several seasons, Sergeant Robert Sawyer has been a volatile force within the Kingstown Police Department. As the leader of an elite SWAT team, his methods have grown increasingly brutal, often opting for extreme violence over de-escalation. This tendency caused major problems, creating friction with District Attorney Evelyn Foley and even straining his relationship with Mike McLusky, who found Robert’s actions were making the city more dangerous.

In Season 4, Episode 7, Robert’s instability reached a breaking point. He was seen blaming Mike for all the misfortunes in his life, showing clear signs of being a significant liability to Mike’s intricate plans. Concerned about Robert’s mental state and erratic behavior, Ian Ferguson intervened.

Ian took Robert to a bar, where he plied him with alcohol. After Robert was heavily intoxicated, Ian drove him to a garage. The episode shows Ian helping an incoherent Robert into a car, starting the engine, and closing the garage door, leaving him inside with the vehicle running. The scene strongly implies Ian’s intention was to stage Robert’s death to look like a tragic accident caused by carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Unanswered Fate: Is Robert Dead?

The episode concluded without explicitly showing Robert’s death, leaving his ultimate fate a tense mystery. The sequence of events, however, paints a very grim picture. Ian’s actions were deliberate and calculated, exploiting Robert’s vulnerability to eliminate him as a threat.

Ian is responsible for the whole incident that happened to Robert in Mayor of Kingstown, and his actions many times are often the focal point of the story.

This act highlights the extreme moral compromises characters must make to survive in Kingstown. Whether Robert is dead or alive, the consequences of Ian’s desperate move will have major repercussions. If Robert is dead, it removes a major source of instability but could devastate Mike and shatter his trust in Ian. If Robert somehow survived, he would return as a furious enemy with nothing left to lose, creating a disastrous situation for both Mike and Ian.

A Season of Major Character Exits

Robert’s potential demise is part of a brutal trend in Season 4, where key allies of Mike McLusky are being killed off. The season’s second episode featured the shocking death of another major character.

In Season 4, Episode 2, prison guard Carney, a loyal ally to Mike, was executed point-blank at his own front door by Cortez, a hitman connected to the Colombian cartel. The sudden and violent death stunned both characters and fans alike.

Actor Lane Garrison, who played Carney, shared his reaction to learning his character’s fate. He compared the phone call from producers to a scene from the baseball movie Bull Durham, where a player is told his time is up.

“I got a callโ€ฆ ‘Weโ€™ve got good news and we have bad news. The bad news is weโ€™re killing you.’ Like, ‘Whatโ€™s the good news?’ ‘Weโ€™re gonna find something for you in Tulsa King.’”

Garrison confirmed that while his time on Mayor of Kingstown is over, producers plan to find him a new role in another Taylor Sheridan series, Tulsa King, which stars Sylvester Stallone. He has one condition for his next part, stating, “Iโ€™m not going to die on the next one”. This marked his 16th or 17th on-screen death.

Where to Watch and What Comes Next

Mayor of Kingstown releases new episodes every Sunday exclusively on the streaming service Paramount+. The series stars Jeremy Renner as Mike McLusky and features Hugh Dillon as Ian Ferguson.

As the season continues, the fallout from Episode 7 will be central. Mike’s complex scheme to pit crime lord Frank Moses against the Colombian cartel is underway, and the instability caused by Robert’s situation or Carney’s death could easily unravel all his careful planning. The power dynamics in Kingstown remain as fragile and deadly as ever.
