A judge who spent a decade serving the corrupt elite is brutally murdered for choosing justice just once. He awakens with a second chance to right every wrong. The new MBC drama The Judge Returns, starring Ji Sung, launched with a shocking two-episode premiere that blends legal thriller suspense with a dramatic time-slip twist.
The story begins in the year 2035, painting a picture of a grim future. A new law forcibly relates homeless people from Seoul’s streets, leading to a surge in suicides. At the center of this corrupted system is the powerful S-Group, a conglomerate that manipulates the law for profit. Judge Lee Han-young (Ji Sung) is known as the reliable “lapdog” for these powerful interests, having never ruled against them.
The Case That Begins A Judge’s Downfall
Han-young’s carefully constructed world starts to crack during a case against Gojin Chemical. Workers exposed to toxic chemicals have developed leukemia and brain tumors, with several already dead. Despite clear evidence, Han-young delivers a cold verdict in favor of the company, denying compensation to the victims and their grieving families. This decision leads directly to the suicide of a young female victim, Han Na-young.
The personal cost of his corruption soon becomes unbearable. Han-young’s mother, ashamed of her son’s actions, attends the victim’s funeral to apologize on his behalf. There, she is confronted by the victim’s grandmother, which triggers a fatal asthma attack. Han-young misses her final moments because he is distracted by a call from his father-in-law about a new case for S-Group. This personal tragedy leaves him devastated and begins a shift in his conscience.
Meanwhile, tenacious prosecutor Kim Jin-a is building a major case against S-Group for embezzlement. She soon identifies Han-young as a key part of the system protecting the conglomerate. She confronts him with evidence, forcing him to see his complicity clearly.
“I finally want to live as the real Lee Han-young,” Han-young says in a moment of desperate regret, a promise that becomes the driving force for his entire journey.
A Single Righteous Verdict Leads To Death
Pressured from all sides, Han-young is forced to oversee the S-Group trial. His father-in-law and even the Chief Justice Kang Shin-jin expect a verdict favoring the conglomerate. In a stunning courtroom reversal, Han-young defies them all. He sentences the S-Group chairman to 10 years in prison and a 24 billion won fine, a punishment harsher than what the prosecutors had requested.
This single act of integrity makes him a target. He is quickly framed for the murder of a key S-Group whistleblower. Despite his pleas of innocence, the evidenceโincluding his fingerprints on the murder weaponโis overwhelming. In prison, a former colleague manipulates him into taking a poison pill, leading to a hospital transfer that he uses to escape.
His freedom is short-lived. While desperately searching for his father, Han-young is chased through rain-soaked alleysโthe scene from the drama’s opening. A masked assailant stabs him in the neck. With his dying breath, Han-young sees Chief Justice Kang Shin-jin watching nearby, confirming the attack was ordered from the very top of the judiciary.
A Supernatural Trial And A Leap Back In Time
Han-young does not find peace in death. Instead, he awakens in a surreal, purgatorial courtroom. Chained and judged by the ghosts of those he wrongedโincluding his mother and the suicide victimโhe is forced to confront his reflection and admit his guilt. He begs for forgiveness and, crucially, for another chance.
His plea is answered. Han-young opens his eyes to find himself not in 2035, but 10 years in the past, in the year 2025. He is back in his very first courtroom, presiding over the case of a petty thief named Kim Sang-jin. Han-young remembers this man will later become a serial killer, a spree that began because Han-young originally gave him a lenient sentence.
Armed with knowledge of the future, a transformed Han-young acts immediately. He violently confronts the thief in court, shocking everyone with his sudden fervor. Determined to prevent future murders, he works outside the law to investigate. He discovers the killer is already blackmailing a young woman, Kang Ju-young, and has stored the remains of his victims in her kimchi refrigerator.
